Anyone have a cat on Prozac???

Ugh.  Long story, but we have a cat with some behavioral issues that manifest themselves by going outside the litter box.  Once we settled into our previous home and things were more calm for her, she was great and perfectly behaved for 5 years.  We just moved this summer and she's just awful again - pooping and peeing all over the house.  I can't have this.  And I know it's only going to get worse once there are two new babies in the house. 

 I've heard of cats being prescribed Prozac for stuff like this and I'm thinking that maybe being on that for a while would calm her down and break the cycle so she can be herself again.  Anyone have experience with this?

Otherwise, anyone want an adorable, sweet fluffy white kitty with an unfortunate tendency to crap on my family room chairs?

    Hi!  Lurker from TTTC.  I just put my kitty on prozac about 2 months ago for this very reason.  It worked miracles.  He's not that much different personality-wise, but the peeing has stopped completely.  It stopped almost immediately and hasn't happened since.   The vet did tell me, though, that it can take up to 4 weeks to work, and that you may have a very different cat after all of this.   And, it may not help at all. 

    My cat had been peeing for years (not every day) and I had tried everything to get him to stop.  I was going to have to put him down if this didn't work.  For $30/month in a kitty treat, I only wished I had done it sooner.   He will probably be on it for life, but I don't care.  I still have my cat, and he doesn't ruin the carpet anymore!

    I do not....but I wanted to say reading this title made me smile I know its NOT funny but cats can be so crazy can't they?  They have a mind of their own! I hope you get it all worked out!

    ME ME ME!  Well, my cat's not on Prozac, but rather Valium, but similar issues.  He unpredictably peed outside the litter box for years.  Like the PP, it worked miracles and he's not had a single "accident" outside the litter box since he started on the Valium (it's been about 4 months).  Go see your vet now!  These meds really do work, and the generic Valium's only $7 a month at Target.

    Our dog has been on prozac for over 2 years!  We rescued her 3 years ago, and we think she was abused and neglected.  She has anxiety issues, particularly severe separation anxiety.  When we are home she is very calm, but when we would leave she would basically have an anxiety attack (according to our vet) and start chewing through things -- like electrical cords.  We tried behavior modification first, but ultimately she needed something to help calm her down.  It took a few weeks to "kick in," but it has worked wonders for her anxiety.  She is on a very small dose.  And, just fyi, you can get the generic at Walmart for $4 a month -- we were paying $30 a month at Walgreens for the same exact prescription!

    Does your vet write a prescription in your pet's name??  Or is it in yours?

    My vet writes me a prescription in my cat's name so the label on the bottle comes out as "Cat/Squeak" which cracks me up every time I see it.

    Mine I get right through our vet, because as she told me, they don't make prozac in that low of a dose for cats.  It has to be specially ordered and they make it into soft treats for me.  The prescription is in his name, and they send it right to me so I don't have to go and pick it up.  I had the option of it being in liquid, pill or treat form.

    my dog has been on anti anxiety meds for some time. I get it at Target and he is a much happier dog (he had some aggression as well as fear of being alone)

    My dog was on an anti-depressant back in the day (unfortunately he's long gone) due to urinating all the time - the vet thought it was anxiety.  It didn't really seem to work for him but good luck to you and your cat!  Also the prescription was in his name.
