Dairy or Lactose intolerance

For those of you that have experience with this, is it possible for LO to be ok with milk but not cheese or yogurt?

She drinks alot of whole milk throughout the day but when she has yogurt or cheese she either spits up or has extreme constipation. I am going to call the Pedi tomorrow but figured someone may know before then.

Re: Dairy or Lactose intolerance

  • Not sure really, but my niece had to watch how much cheese she ate because it always constipated her. Don't think my sister ever looked into it though.

Not likely, it's usually the other way around if it's a lactose intolerance. There is less lactose in yogurt and cheese than milk. Try soy or coconut milk yogurt

This is what I was going to say. I'm lactose intolerant, but I can handle cheese and yogurt. Just no ice cream, or a lot of milk.

  • Thanks Ladies. That is what I was thinking too.

  • Dairy in general can cause constipation. If lo can drink wcm's, they are not allergic to dairy. Babies with allergies to the protein in cows milk can often tolerate yogurt and sometimes cheese.

My lo has a dairy allergy and can tolerate yogurt, but thats it. I am hoping he will out grow this over time.

Abigail has had a constipation issue since she was about 3 months old. We tried so many different formulas. She still has the issue. She's allowed two cups of 4-5oz milk a day and one other serving of dairy to see if that helps. She also gets 2Tbs of miralax and 1-3tsp of metamucil a day (I usually just give 1tsp). You could always try limiting her dairy products for a few days and see if that helps the constipation.

She has had constipation issues for awhile too. She is on a prescription type stool softner. They said she was to young still for miralax or metamucil.

We have stopped giving her cheese and yogurt. She can still have mac and cheese or things of that nature. It just seems to be string cheese or cheese cube type things that do it.

  • I myself can not tolerate milk or yogurt, but I have no trouble with cheese or ice cream. It must just be how they are processed differently.
