We have a vacation coming up & I hate staying home when I take time off. I'm seriously looking into visiting the Dallas/Ft. Worth area & would like any info. on nice places to stay, where to visit, & all the touristy things to do such as museums & the longhorns!!
It's been a few years since we visited, we had went with a bunch of friends to Six Flags & we were childless. Also, have any of you had a great experience with the Great Wolf Lodge or if it is even close to anything? TIA
Re: Dallas area moms
The Arboretum is probably only 30-40 minutes from Grapevine where the Great Wolf Lodge is. They have a great exhibit right now called Chihuly. Its a bunch of glass sculptures displayed over water. I was told its best at night because they light it all up! Its not too far to stay at Great wolf and drive there as well.
How long are you staying? When are you coming? I'm assuming you're bringing the kids? Do you know the general area you want to stay?
Without knowing those things, I can give a few suggestions. I've never been to Great Wolf Lodge, but it looks like fun. We've thought about it.
The Arboretum is basically a really, really big flower garden. It's beautiful, but it's super hot here right now, so I'd suggest an evening trip if you want to check that out. In the fall though, we like to go in the late morning, then bring a picnic lunch. They also have concerts on Thursday nights. Very enjoyable
The Galleria has ice skating, which is fun, but your boys aren't there yet.The Dallas Museum of Science and History has a children's museum that is very age appropriate for your boys. I'm going to bring C there next week.
The Dallas Zoo is nice, but the Fort Worth Zoo is MUCH better, if you're willing to drive. The Fort Worth Stockyards are always fun, too. Eat at Risky's and watch the "cattle drive". Then check out Billy Bob's. We have gone in with C. It's more or a touristy place and less of a "bar" during the day.
Downtown area is fun to walk around. The 6th Floor museum (JFK) is interesting and so is House of Blues. You can also go up to the top of Reunion tower and have a drink. We always like to eat at El Fenix when we walk around down there.
The World Aquarium is amazing! We love it, although it's a little pricey.
Uptown has some good restaurants and shopping and a path called the "Katy Trail". We have walked it a couple times and DH and SD ride bikes there sometimes.
There are tons of other museums and things depending on what you're interested in. Let me know if you have any specific questions! If I think of anything else, I'll add another reply.
In Grapevine itself there is Great Wolf Lodge, the Gaylord, an Aquarium and Legoland (both are at Grapevine Mills mall, kind of a crappy outlet mall, but I've heard good things about the aquarium/legoland there, just make sure you have reservations). You can also ride the train in Grapevine, i think there are a few different options.
Arboretum is gorgeous, but I agree that it's HOT this time of year. There is a splash pad there though, fun for toddlers. There are great children's history museums on both the Dallas & Ft Worth side, probably equal distance from Grapevine. Fort Worth Zoo is awesome.
There are also quite a few smaller waterparks and splash pads in the area. Let us know when you decide where you are staying, we can recommend some places. I know there is one in Carrolton that's free!
We live really close to Grapevine, if you want to meet up PM me and we'll set something up!
We are on vacation next week (I know, short notice) & we plan to stay about 4 nights. We would leave either Tuesday or Wednesday. Yes, the twins will be coming along so I am looking for fun things to do with kids. I'm not too sure about which general area other than we've looked into the Great Wolf Lodge. I'll stay anywhere nice as in 4-5 star hotel.
As for things to do, I'm really liking your information & checking this stuff out. We love museums, aquariums, & zoos. I'm not much of a shopper, but have been to the Galleria several times. Thanks for the info. on the stockyards & cattle drive because I've always wanted to see that!! Thanks so much!! Keep the suggestions coming!!
So there is more than one aquarium in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area? Has anyone been to this Lego Land?? I'm sure it's not any cooler up there than it is down here, but I'm not a fan of the heat. I've just learned to deal with it. We will be going this coming week!!
This would be so awesome!! Since I'm the only one in SA, it would be nice to meet up with you ladies & cute babies!
so you'll be here the 11th/12th? we've been discussing a pool party in august and that date could be an option:)
I'm sure the Grapevine Mills Sea Life aquarium is nowhere near as robust and cool as the Dallas one (my favorite part of the Dallas one is the otters!) but it's probably cheaper to get in, and would be right across the street (probably even by hotel shuttle) if you stay in Grapevine.I haven't been there or to that legoland there, but they are attached to the same mall.
In the actual city of Dallas, there's 2 aquariums... the Aquarium at Fair Park (close to the Science Museum) and the Dallas World Aquarium. World Aquarium is tons better, but the one in Fair Park isn't too bad. There are a couple others in smaller towns around.
I actually enjoy the Dallas Museum of Art quite a bit. It's a great museum, but I didn't know if you'd want to do an art museum with toddlers.
I also forgot to mention that both Rangers stadium and Cowboys stadium do tours. Even if you're not a Cowboys fan, that stadium is VERY cool. And we took Carter with us when we toured it.
The 11th for sure. I'm not sure if we will leave then or on the 12th. Still doing some research, but I'm a last minute planner anyways!
