Carriers for older babies/toddlers

Hi all,

I have a 9 month daughter that I have been wearing in a ring sling from day 1 but now that she's getting older and heavier, I'm finding the ring sling uncomfortable on my back and shoulder and she doesn't seem comfortable either. Is it how I'm wearing the sling? I've tried all the ways the manual says to try but I can't find one that seems to work. Should I try a different type of carrier and could I get some recommendations? I don't like the bjorn or harness type carriers if that makes sense. Thanks!

  • I found around 9mths DD1 got too heavy for a sling. I needed the comfort of having the weight spread between two shoulders rather than one shoulder taking it all.

I love my woven wraps. You can wear LO on your back, front or hip. There's a bit of a learning curve to tying them but it's worth it in my opinion.

  • I've always been happy using a soft structured carrier - specifically, the Beco Butterfly. But the Boba looks awesome, and it goes up to a higher weight range than the Butterfly.

  • I still carry my 2 year old in my mei tei. She absolutely loves it. When i am not using it for her, I carry my 5 month old in it. I dont know what I would do without it.

  • RS tend to go through a period where they don't work well because of baby's weight but then become great when you have a toddler who wants quick up and downs and "carries" more of their own weight through muscle tone. Wraps, mai tais, and quality soft-structered carriers that are not crotch-danglers are all good options. Personally, I only wrap, and I only wrap using woven wraps, and love it. Wraps are so, so versatile!
  • The Mei Tei is our favorite! But neither of us ever liked ring slings. :P
