How many is too many?

I am getting things washed and ready and I have over 20 receiving blankets. DO I really need that many??? Should I return a package of 5 of them? TIA!

Re: How many is too many?

  • I wouldn't, but I like having excess because when things are crazy you don't want to have just enough to get by. I like having enough that some can be in the wash, some are in the car dirty from an outting or the dirty clothes basket, and some are clean. this is especially true in the beginning before you get into a routine with balancing the new baby and housework again

  • I am a FTM but I don't have an receiving blankets. All of my friends with babies said they are useless because you can't swaddle with them. I have 5 swaddle blankets, about 20 burp rags (cloth diaper ones), and 3-4 fleece blankets for winter when she starts rolling and won't be swaddled.

My friends said they only used receiving blankets as burp rags, that's why I mentioned how many rags I have.

  • I use the receiving blankets as swaddeling.. but after a few months - you don't use them once they start moving and sitting and crawling... I have about 20 too- I like them big though the brand I have is Kushies...

It depends- baby could be very spitty or not - and I use them as burp clothes after too - and for light weight blankets in car, and in car seat and to put down to cover up.. they are great!  I think 15 is good..

It depends on what kind. With my son, we had way too many. We had the regular size Target ones, but he outgrew them way too quickly. I wish I would have returned some when I could. We had to buy some miracle blankets to keep swaddling him.

This time we bought some of the big Aden + Anais ones, and I don't think I could ever have too many. I love these blankets.

  • I am the queen of having too much stuff and I think 20 is excessive. You will have your handful of favorites and will wash and reuse those often. They grow out of the receiving blankets more quickly than you think and then you need bigger kid blankets. Return the pack of 5...15 is MORE than plenty.

  • Thanks ladies! This has been helpful. I do have a bunch of them that are BIG but can't figure out what I would use that many for. :) Thanks again!

  • I would keep them. We also got a lot at our shower. I plan on using them for basically everything so I'm excited we got a bunch.

  • We have about 20 & used every single one of them last go round.

This is me but that is also because I don't have any burp rags so I will be using the blankets. Plus whenever I have taken care of babies in the past (I am a FTM) I have used them for EVERYTHING! They are blankets, they are spit rags, they are changing table liners, everything. I can never get enough of them, I really like the super cheap thin ones they have at the hospital. My mom got a bunch of them given to her because they were old and the hospital didn't want them anymore and she saved them for me, soooo thankful for that.

  • I think 20 is a bit much! Unless you want to use them as burp cloths as well. Also, I used them to swaddle DS with, and I thought they worked perfectly.

  • I think receiving blankets are not very useful. I don't have many. The one that I do like is one that the baby will have pictures in during our hospital photo shoot. Being a summer baby, it won't be very useful for a long while. Returning some would leave more room in the closet for cute clothes.
