1st Trimester

Anyone else with no appetite?

I am 7 weeks, I have all day morning sickness, no energy and no appetite. My husband makes me eat even when I don't want to, but I have actually lost 4 pounds since becoming pregnant. Is that normal?

Re: Anyone else with no appetite?

  • Lurking from 2nd tri....

Yes this is very normal.  I lost 11 lbs in my first trimester, but I've gained it all back now.  Hang in there, it'll get better.  :)

  • Yes, this is happening for me to. At least, no foods sound appetizing! I have to force myself to eat because if I let my stomach get too empty I start vomiting. I've found that I can eat Cheerios almost anytime, they're a safe neutral food for me.

  • This is me.  It wasn't like this with my first pregnancy.  Ugh.  And I just spent $150 at Whole Foods yesterday hoping that something in my cart would appeal to me at some point.  I was able to choke down a cream cheese sandwich yesterday but not much else.

  • I feel your pain.  I think green grapes are the only thing I can eat now.  Everything else makes me vomit, literally.  I have lost about 4 pounds too.  We'll get through this!
  • Thanks, good to know. I was getting a little worried. I haven't had my first appointment yet, so I have a really long list of questions. To top it off, I am in another country and I don't speak the language so my husband will have to translate everything the doctors says.

  • pretty normal but it depends on how much you "have to lose" - obviously weight gain is a part of pregnancy but excessive weight loss is not good either (especially if you are petite to begin with - - however if BMI is over 40 some weight loss may be recommended) because you need to make sure you/baby are getting enough nutrients and even more important is staying hydrated!

Try to eat when you can - I find snacking on bland things - crackers, pretzels, dried fruits are the best ways to keep eating - even if your not that hungry... that way your not trying to scarf down a 5 course meal when you feel crummy...

Make sure you get lots of protein and complex carbs for energy also iron is important and calcium too - so yogurt, milk, cheese.

Thanks. Yes, I am trying to eat, especially when I feel sick. I make myself drink milk to coat my stomach. Diet is an entirely new question for me because I am a vegetarian, so getting certain nutrients can be a little more difficult.  I guess that I am average body weight. I am 5 ft  8 in and I weigh 128, so from what I read, I should gain 25-35 pounds throughout pregnancy. I am just glad to hear that I am not the only one loosing weight rather than gaining.

  • Oh thank you for posting this! I thought I was the only one! My hubby is driving me crazy telling me what to eat, but I just don't have an appetite. No nausea yet (knock on wood) but just no desire to eat. We were at Cracker Barrel this weekend bc I LOVE their pancakes and he had the nerve to tell me I should get the blueberry syrup for my pancakes instead of the maple bc "blueberries have a lot of antioxidants." Just let me eat what I like, sheesh!

  • Yep, normal. With #1, I was fine until about week 8, then had terrible all day morning sickness.  I lost 5 lbs.  It eventually went away about week 15 or so and I gained the weight back, then kept on with a healthy gaining streak until having DD.

Now I'm 5 wks and fortunately no MS yet, but I haven't had much of an appetite.  I'm trying to just nibble through my day, and trying to "nibble" on meal-type (vs. snacky) food so I am getting good nutrition.

Hoping the M/S won't hit me as hard as it did with DD, because the only thing I could eat (and keep down) was EZ Cheez.  (Mmm, EZ Cheez.)

  • I haven't been eating very much either! I think it's a combination of actually eating healthier so I'm actually full after a smaller meal. I too have been forcing myself to eat. I just want to make sure I'm giving baby every chance to be healthy.
