XP: Harmony test results

Thought I'd both do a little AW as well as provide my experience with the new Harmony fetal DNA blood testing (similar to MaterniT21) for anyone who is interested:

I had two vials of blood drawn and sent to the Harmony lab on July 12
We heard back last week that the first vial produced no results, apparently there was no fetal DNA in the sample
We heard back today that the second vial was valid, and our chances of Down's and trisomies 13 and 18 are less than 1/10,000 (99% accuracy rate)

Needless to say, at 43 I am over the moon with these results. I also was happy with the testing process, it was easy and with so much less risk/stress than the amnio would have been. Still waiting to hear whether insurance will cover the $800 bill, but we are willing to pay for the peace of mind, so that's just a detail at this point!

Great results and thank you for sharing! We just had our NT scan done (measured in normal range) but are still waiting on the results of the blood work that goes with that one. My DH was starting to talk himself into us doing amnio (I'm against it) if the risk probability on the combined NT test was high enough. I was able to convince him that we should do the Harmony test instead - 99% accuracy is pretty dang good. I'm willing to lose the 100% accuracy of amnio to have a test that does not have an associated miscarriage risk.

First, you'll have to find out where/if the test is being offered in your community. I'm going to a University of California medical center, and they only started doing the test two weeks before I got it! Here's the website of the company that developed the test:

The alternate (but I think similar/same) test is the MaterniT21

Both tests look for Down's and trisomies 13 and 18.

It's a simple blood test - they just drew two additional vials when I got my early quad screen blood drawn the day I got my NT scan. They said results are generally back within 10 days.

At this point, some insurance companies aren't covering the test, which is expensive. But I was so grateful to avoid something more invasive!

Thanks so much for sharing this. I'll be doing this test in a few weeks, and it is great to know how long your results took and how they handled samples with no DNA.

I just got mine back yesterday and the results were the same as yours. At 40 that is a big HOORAY!! It was a simple bood draw and I agree, covered or not worth the $ for the piece of mind and avoiding an amnio!
