Measuring 6cm at 8 weeks?!

okay, maybe I'm a little confused! So last week when I went to my confirmation appt, during my physical exam my NP said I was 9 weeks 1 day (based on my last period) BUT we went in for a ultrasound and the embryo was 4cm so they put me at 7 weeks. Today I went in for some spotting, had another ultrasound, fetus measuring now at 6cm and I am at 8 weeks. But when I do the calculations, the cm measurement doesn't add up. Are they measuring something different or a different way? The 8 weeks today, is spot on for when i conceived. But this is the second ultrasound tech that measured like this, so i think I am missing something... can anyone help me understand?

Re: Measuring 6cm at 8 weeks?!

  • All I know is the measurement is taken from head to rump.  As baby grows, the doc will make adjustments to the date.  I would go with whatever measurement the doc gives you as to how many weeks along you are.  They always date it based on LMP to start with until they can get measurements and then adjust from there

  • Huh.  6cm seems a bit large for 8 weeks.  I just had an u/s yesterday and I measured 24.7mm, or 2.47cm, which they said was right on track for 9w1d.

I don't think the fetus is supposed to measure 6cm until about week 12.

All of this. Either they aren't measuring correctly, or they are measuring head to toes (which, from what I understand, is pretty much impossible this early) or you are further than 8 weeks.

  • 6 cm does sound very large so early on.

  • Maybe they're measuring the sac?  Definitely too big for the baby.

  • I would go over to the 'How Big is Baby?' tool here on the site and see which one is closest in size to the measurements they are taking.  I am bad at math so I'm not going to attempt to convert this into cm, but according to it, at 7 wks, baby is roughly half an inch (.51), and at 9 wks, baby is just under 1 inch (.9).  It's the same thing that the ladies who responded above me have in their siggy's (ie. baby is the size of a blueberry, etc).

  • Like PP, I agree that sounds big.

But, by the more than should be growth.... I had that too.  Baby was measuring 5.5 weeks, then 2 weeks and 2  days later, baby was measuring 8.5 weeks.  Which also, corresponded closer to my calculations based on ovulation.

I had an u/s today and the baby measured 6.08 cm and 12w3d.  Your measurement definitely seems big for 8 weeks.

  • I also had an ultrasound today and I am 14 weeks.  My baby was measuring 8.44 cm and they said it is measuring almost a week ahead.  I don't think 6 cm and 8 weeks correspond.

  • Here is a link to average fetal length: https://www.babycenter.com/average-fetal-length-weight-chart

You should be under 2 cm at 8w.

  • i had my first ultrasound on July 31 at 10w4d and baby measures 3.4cm crown to rump and the dr said baby was just the right size! so 6cm for 8 weeks, im guessing, is probably not correct!
