s/o talking ... interesting family history

DH was talking to his mom last night about our concerns about DS' language development, and she told him that he (DH) didn't talk until 2 years old! Apparently, at that point they finally took him to a specialist and found out there was something wrong with his hearing, and once they got it fixed, he caught right up.

I just thought it was interesting. DH is perfectly normal (albeit a bit on the quiet side), so it was reassuring that even if we're a little behind now, it doesn't mean DS won't catch up.

  • My H didnt' talk until he was 2 as well, and now he speaks for a living.  No issues!  Gives me hope too that if A was behind at some point, he can always catch up.

  • My mom, my husband and his brother all didn't speak until 2 or a little after.  All are fine and successful people!

  • DH didn't talk until he was 2 also. That is one reason why the pedi isn't pushing intervention with DD.

  • So interesting! I guess late talkers were more common back in the day. That's the one disadvantage of all the info that's out there about child development now...more stuff to get us worried, huh!

  • I think there are still a lot of late talkers.  I just think there are a lot more over-achieving parents because of more milestone charts, books, and the internet.  If you ask even your own parent they will have no idea when you hit "milestones" such as clapping, waving or imitated a drawing you did.

Not to say knowledge is bad since obviously so much has been done with early intervention, but it also creates paranoid parents.  Ya know...like myself :)

  • Yea, at Griffs last appointment the pedi mentioned if Griff isn't saying any new words by Sept then we'll have to get his hearing checked.
