I have my first appointment scheduled for this Friday, I'll be exactly 8 weeks, and I have a few questions for those more experienced. Should I be expecting a transvaginal ultrasound or an abdominal one- or does this just depend on the physician? Should I bring my husband? Roughly how long did the appointment take? Were there any questions you weren't prepared for?
Thanks!
Re: 1st appointment questions
I think this is only a qestion your pysician could answer. I went to mine at 7.5 weeks and she didn't even examine me, at all. Just gave me paperwork, answered questions, and sent me for blood work. I do have the paperwork to go get my first u/s after 11 weeks, and I have another appointment at 11.5 weeks with my doctor for a physical and to hear the baby's heart beat.
Good luck!
Do you know you're having an u/s at all? It's not standard and varies from doctor to doctor. If you ARE having one, it would be transvaginal at this stage. If you know you're getting an u/s and your husband can go, I'd bring him because it's exciting to see
Otherwise, I didn't bring my husband to my other appointments. They're boring and routine. Pee in a cup, get weighed, blood pressure and for the first visit, a pap. Not exciting
as the pp said, it really depends on where you go.
With my first. It consisted of a LONG interview asking my medical history to my family history to my emotional history. It was nuts. And a quick physical exam.
The second office I went to, it was a transvaginal u/s and a quick, "Any questions?" And a lecture on drinking more water.
Any u/s this early would be transvaginal.
I would say 1 hour+.
I don't bring DH with me to my appts.
With DS I had a transvaginal u/s at 6w 1d. With this LO I was 8w 6d and she did it abdominally...so be prepared either way! They may try abdominal and may end up doing transvag if they can't see what they need to!
I ALWAYS take DH to every appointment :0) It's your preference, but to let you know you won't be able to hear the heartbeat yet...
With DS my first appointment took 2 hours! I had never met the doctor and I needed a pap. Plus blood work, physical, etc. With this LO my first appointment took 35 minutes. (I had already had my ultrasound 2 days prior.) So it just all depends on a lot of factors. If you already know your OB/midwife and are up to date on your paps it may not take as long as my very first!
Good luck

I would call your doctor's office and ask them what you can expect. Every OB is different and what happens at the first appointment can also depend on your health info. If you are 45, for example, you may experience something different than a pt who is 25. Just call and ask, they are used to it
