Speaking of sweets and juice

What's your plan as far as giving LO juice? My plan is juice free until 3 but I suspect my husband will want to offer her some sooner. Any juice given will be diluted and 100% unsweetened juice. I would rather her have smoothies or eat her fruit as fruit.

  • I was thinking no juice until age 1, and even then it will be like 25% juice 75% water.

  • Probably 1. I'd rather milk be his main source. I give him water in the sippy cup at dinner but he hardly drinks it, and when he does it's by accident. He has no idea what to do with that cup. Haha

  • I was thinking and wondering about juice the other day.  Is there any reason for it (aside from medical reasons like constipation), or is it just something to drink that isn't just water but is less filling than milk?

Just curious because juice is certainly not something we keep around.

  • We don't buy or drink juice so I doubt we'll buy any for O. I don't know when I'll let him try it for the first rims, but I plan on it being an occasional thing once he's older.

  • Really I don't see the need in giving juice at all.  If they like water then why not stick with it.  I plan on going as long as possible.  Since I control what he eats now it should be easy but I suspect that it will be harder as he gets older.

  • Probably around 2 or so, and it will be diluted.

  • Unless he needs it for constipation, I really don't plan to give LO juice.  DH and I don't drink a lot of juice, and when we do, I just buy a small container and add a splash of it to flavor water.

  • I honestly do not see why there is such hate towards juice. My DD has juice every day. We give the option of a cup of juice, water, or milk for each meal. She gets water between meals.

  • we don't keep it in the house so it's highly unlikely DS will get any except for a medical reason.

I don't really get it either. Every person that I know that has children gives juice.

  • DH and I rarely buy or drink juice ourselves, so I doubt LO will be getting much of it either. We always have plenty of fresh fruits and veggies around, so I prefer that he get his this way as well.

  • My reasons are along the lines of not wanting her to drink her calories and not wanting to add juice to our household.

    This.  I still dilute DS1's juice about 25/75 & he's 3.

  • I don't have a detailed master plan regarding juice.

My husband and I don't like juice that much, so we rarely buy it.  I tried to give prune, apple, and pear juice to Margo for constipation, but she refused all three.  If we have constipation issues again, I'll try juice again.  And later, if she likes juice, I'll give her juice.  In moderation.

Hell, I just want her to stay hydrated.  It's something I obsess about.

  • My plan is to introduce juice maybe at around 3.. And any juice I give her will only be fresh squeezed.. Nothing from concentrate and definately no juice boxes.

  • I'm with moozilla on this one. Ds1 started juice when he was 1. The pedi told us we were giving him too much milk even after we switched to 2% from whole milk. He flat out refused water (if water was all I gave him, he would go all day without drinking anything except his allotted amount of milk), so we started doing mostly water with some unsweetened pure Apple juice or orange juice. He never gets sugary juices like koolaid or other 'kid' drinks, but he drinks watered down juice every day. And I see absolutely no issues with that.
