Should I try a sleep slack?

I love the Magic Sleep Suit. It really was magical while it lasted (3 months!) but now I think DS is moving beyond it. The suit keeps him from being able to roll over and I think he's at the point where he's ready for freedom in his crib.

However, I've tried just pajamas for several nights and he's up every few hours. Plus I don't think his normal pajamas will keep him warm enough and we're not ready to put him to bed with a blanket yet (especially since he'll just kick it off).

Is the sleep suit a good transition? Can babies move and roll in the sack? Does it still give a snug/secure feeling?

TIA!

Re: Should I try a sleep slack?

  • We've used sleep sacks from day 1 with Michael. I don't know if it makes him feel secure, because it's just another layer. He can roll over while wearing it and he moves all around the crib in it as well. I dress him in a cotton zip up pj and then put the cotton sleep sack over it.

  • We use one at daycare and DD likes it. She can move well in it. At home I just use a blanket and she almost always is still covered in the morning.

  • Sophie can definitely move in hers. This morning I found her turned around facing the opposite direction of how I laid her down last night (and she looked pretty confused about it!).

I think you can buy different weights of sleep sacks. The kind we have is cotton, so it's breathable, but still warm. There are muslin kinds, but I thought that would be too cool, and there are fleece kinds, but I thought it would make her too hot. (I feel like I'm in Goldilocks...) We also have a hand-me-down that was actually quilted, but it would have been more appropriate for the dead of winter.

Sophie is a kicker, too - if I put a blanket on her, she'll kick it off in seconds. With the sleep sack she can kick as much as she wants, but she'll never kick it off.

  • The sleep sacks we have aren't snug at all - they're just like fleece PJ's but with a closed gown type bottom instead of legs.  They can roll or do whatever in them, but they definitely don't give a similar feeling to swaddles or the sleep suit.

What we do now is just PJ's and when we put them down we take a small, light blanket and tuck them in really tight.  We usually put their arms against their sides and tuck the blanket around them.  They seem to like going down that way, but in the morning they're on their stomachs and at the opposite end of the crib.  Of course, this will only work if you're comfortable putting a blanket in the crib, I know a lot of people aren't.

  • We use aden and anias muslin sleep sacks.  it's been pretty hot here, and with Mia's room being on the 3rd floor, it's can be warm up there (we have a/c and a ceiling fan, but still)  She sleeps most nights in a short sleeve onesie and the sleep sack.  I think with a fan the breeze is too much on her bare skin, so this is like avery lightweight blanket. as it gets cooler she will wear onepeice long sleeve PJs and I'm sure we will graduate to a thicker sleep sack (we have one in cotton, and i like at aiden and anias 4 layer ones).  She moves around a TON!  she's all over the crib, on her side, her stomach, her back. She'll use one at least till age one, if not longer as long as she still likes them.
