Given that NYC is crazy about everything, I was still surprised to find out that even though I won't need childcare for another 8 months, I'm "late" in my search! For those of you with kids or who already made childcare decisions (esp if your child needed full-time care, like my son will), what were your thoughts on NYC-based in-home family care facilities vs group daycare? I can see the benefit of having less kids in an in-home setting, but it worries me that the adult in charge is totally in charge and doesn't answer to other adults, like they would at a daycare. Hiring or sharing a nanny is likely way out of our price range, but all of this is of course more complicated by the fact that almost no care providers list their rates online! I have no idea what an average per hour or per month rate is in Brooklyn or Manhattan. Any resources, advice, is appreciated!

Re: Deciding between family in-home care vs daycare
I live on the UWS and checked out two day cares here: The River School and Preschool of America. The River School transitions children to new classrooms in September, they have 16 infant spots, so probably aren't filled. They cost $2495/mo. Preschool of America (this is a chain and there are many in NYC) transition by development and they cost $1900/mo. I think you would probably be able to get a spot applying now. At least the one on the UWS had a few cribs with no sheets and some empty cubbies which I assume means they aren't running at full capacity.
Neither of these places listed costs on their website, but we just scheduled a tour. If you want to know prices and don't have time to tour, I'm sure places will tell you over the phone and let you know the likelyhood of a spot being open when you need.
All that said, I have decided to stay home since my salary would basically just cover the daycare and they all have 4:1 rations of children to adult. It would be a different story if daycare was cheaper or my job paid more.
