GERD (acid reflux)

Our pediatrician thinks our babyboyhas GERD (acid reflux). They are having us try a little bit of liquid mylanta or maalox for a couple of days to see if his symptoms improve. Does anyone else's baby have GERD and if so what were his/her symptoms and what did you do to help the symptoms?

How did you know that your LO has acid reflux? I don't know if my DS has it or not? The only thing I notice is that he gets fussy at the breast but I'm not surely its because I have forceful letdown? He seems pass a ton of gas usually while he's sleeping. My question is how do you know?

I guess the symptoms are making lots of gulping and coughing noises and sort of wheezing noises while eating, spitting up each time he or she eats, being much more comfortable sitting up instead of lying down especially after eating, crying at the breast and in between feelings, and moving his or her arms and legs up and down while crying very hard. Im going to try the liquid maalox for two days and if I don't see any improvement they want me to come into the office. I hope this helps, poor little guy :-(

My DS has 'silent' reflux, meaning he has all the symptoms but doesn't spit up at every feeding. He gulps and coughs. If he is laying down flat he can choke on his stomach acid. You can hear it bubbling up when he is trying to eat. My ped put us on zantac first and when that didn't work we moved to a compounded medicine called Zegrid. That is now now working as well and we are being sent to a GI specialist. Things we have done to help keep him comfortable.

Hold upright right after eating for 20-30 minutes.

Put pillow under crib mattress to allow him to sleep on an incline

The swing has helped us tremendously.

He is also on sensitive formula

I hope the malox works for you guys.

My LO starting developing symptoms around 4 weeks. She would arch her back and scream whenever we were burping her because of the stomach acid coming up in her spit up. She also gets hiccups a lot and sounds congested during (and after) a feeding.

I think we've pretty much figured out how to keep her comfortable:

She's on Zantac .8ml 2x and we switched her formula to Nutramigen

Keep baby as upright as possible while eating (we usually can only get LO to a 45degree angle)

We keep her in her bouncy seat for at least 30 min after each meal and we have her sleep in it while in her crib because she spits up on her back and I'm afraid of her choking in her sleep.

Make sure you have lots and lots of bibs and spit rags. If your baby does have reflux you're going to need them lol

    GOOD LUCK!
