GI Car for kids? Dr. Benjamin Gold

Has anyone been to GI Care for Kids? I have been referred there for B's reflux. He has been inconsolable unless I am holding him for the past few days. We have been on 2 different meds so now off to the GI specialist we go. The dr I could get into soonest is on Johnson Fry rd though and I don't know how I am going to keep B in the car that long. He screams so hard in the car I don't know if I can do that to him, but the Johns Creek location can't take us until the 7th and he can't wait that long at the rate we are going. Any other recs? This seems to be the Thomas eye group of pediatric GI specialists in ATL.  Any recs or advice from moms who's babies have had severe reflux would be great. We have not slept in a few days and the only way he is comfortable is if one of us is holding him upright. TIA.

  • I don't have any experience here but just wanted to say I'm sorry you are dealing with this.  I know you and everyone in the house must be exhausted!  I hope that you are able to get some answers and some sleep soon!

  • I'm so sorry his reflux is so bad. Mia's was awful, but we didn't see a specialist. Pretty much the same thing, though, lots of staying upright and sleeping inclined. Smaller, more frequent feedings helped, too. I hope he (and you) get some relief soon.

  • Does the swing help at all?  When P's reflux got really bad we put him in the swing and the motion helps wash the acid down.

  • That practice is known as the best pediatric GI practice in Atlanta--some of the best GI's from around the city combined to form that practice.
  • The swing helps keep him sleeping comfortably after he falls asleep on me. He can only tolerate the motion of the swing if he is awake. Trying to transfer him from my arms to the crib has been a disaster. He has just been sleeping in the swing. I am thinking of putting him in the Britax boulevard car seat for his appointment tomorrow, in hopes that he can make the ride w/o screaming so hard for so long. I have to look at the weight limits, but it should be ok b/c as of yesterday he was 13lbs. Anyone know if this is ok to do?  He also does this thing where when he gets worked up he chokes on his own stomach acid and turns blue, if you are not holding him upright. It's HORRIBLE! Dh is going to come with me so that we can get him through the car ride. This morning is the first time I have been able to put him down awake since they upped his medicine yesterday. I didn't realize how reflux could just rule your life with a little one. Now that I look back on how much Colin HATED the infant seat, I wonder if he had a more mild case of it that we just didn't catch, b/c it wasn't bad enough to need meds.

  • My good friend's DD had horrible reflux. She had her sleeping in a Nap Nanny for a long time. It was the only way she could sleep.

Azlyn hated the car seat too. But, it sounds like B's may be because of his reflux... I don't think Azlyn's was because of her reflux. White noise helped a lot in the car seat. Not sure if that would help at all, but it can't hurt to try.

Good luck at the appointment! I hope you get some answers and relief for B!

They didn't have the nap nanny when C was born. I wonder if that incline would be comfortable for B? I will have to check it out. White noise might work in the car but he is usually screaming so loud he wouldn't hear it. He is ver uncomfortable in the seat b/c of the angle it forces him to sit at and it compresses his stomach pushing the acid up. I feel SO bad for him.

  • The Nap Nanny was a lifesaver for us.

GI Care for Kids is AWESOME!! Easton and EB were both patients of Dr. Pilzer. Easton was referred for another issue, but EB had terrible reflux. We tried 2 different meds via our regular pediatrician, but Dr. Pilzer moved her to Axid and it worked wonders! It wasnt a cure, but really helped and she outgrew the reflux around 5 months. I love our pedi, but the GI Dr just had so many other resources available that I felt like we could get it under control fast and it gave me more confidence that we really would sleep again! Dr Pilzer was also a  huge BF advocate and really worked to fix EB without making me do some crazy diet to eliminate foods etc. Anyway, I hope you get a fast cure and get some sleep!

  • We went there for over a year when Abigail was having her constipation issues. Didn't see Dr. Gold, but the entire office was so nice! We had a very positive experience. I'm sorry you are dealing with such bad reflux with B. I hope they are able to give him (and you) some relief.

  • as you know I went through this with both boys.  DO NOT lay him down in his crib unless it is inclined.  You can put a pillow under the mattress but if he is a mover you will find him at the end of the bed like I did my boys.  The bouncy, car seat or swing is the only thing that really helps.  I know they have that new incline chair thing and let me tell you if baby girl has this I will probably go buy that.  But don't lay him down flat for anything except diaper change.  And make that fast.  Both boys lived on my chest.

I saw Dr. Patel with GI Cares for Kids. at the NP location. Loved him!

We never saw a specialist (just the regular pedi) b/c we were finally able to get the acid under control with Prevacid.  He still spit-up massive amounts but at least it didn't burn.  Once we were under control there he could finally sleep in the crib on an incline (we used heavy books under one end).  All the best with getting it under control.  C finally outgrew it at 6 months.

  • I am so sorry.  : (  I don't have any recs but I will be praying for little B and hopefully he can be seen soon to help relieve the pains from reflux.  I'll also be praying for the rest of you so you can soon get some rest.

  • You might try him sleeping in a Rock n Play sleeper also. We are borrowing one from a friend and Colin likes it. It's inclined but it also is kind of like a sling so it holds them close. Several friends with reflux babies said it really helped. It's made by Fisher Price and not too expensive. I hope they are able to help him and all of you can get some rest. Colin has some reflux too and it is so sad to watch him in pain. We just started Zantac so I'm hoping it will help. My pediatrician also said that the carseat is usually bad for reflux because the angle pushes on their stomach. I hope one of these other things will be good for B.
