Getting harder to nurse---how to hold her?

E is getting harder to hold while nursing. I can't seem to get comfortable when we nurse unless we are side laying.  Sitting on the couch or rocker is getting awkward due to her size.  I didnt' nurse my other girls due to latch issues, so this is new to me.  We don't use the boppy for nursing because it's just too bulky now.  Her little legs dangle over my knee....she's just so long it seems!  I don't know how it's going to be BFing a older infant....it's already getting to be a challenge nursing her now and she's only 4 months old.  And like the post below, she's wiggly.  Not to mention she likes to play with my nip sometimes and try and talk while eating, smile, unlatch loudly by pushing my boob away and smile thinking it's funny.  If she weren't so cute it would be more frusterating!

  • Yeah I know, they are getting so big!  I still use a BF pillow but his legs hang off the end.  If we're out and about then he nurses no pillow, and instead of him laying on his side he's a bit more upright.  But yeah, so distracted!

  • Yup, it's like all the sudden eating time is fun time.  It's adorable, but I wanna say, "quite playing with your food and just eat!!!"  But she would probably think that would be funny as well.

L does this and it cracks me up! She'll be latched on and give big ole grins and try to talk to me. She's so stinking cute! Anyway, we nurse laying down mostly. It's the most comfortable. NIP is a pain bc she gets so distracted now!

I think it must be a phase.  They are more aware of their surroundings and becoming more social.  Food makes her happy and if it doesn't put her asleep then it makes her ready to play.  She's very alert for playtime after a feeding and it's just fun to see her little face light up and be amazed at everything.

  • I've been nursing on an angle. Where her butt is on my thigh or even sometimes I set her butt on what ever I'm sitting on so it's almost like she's sitting next to me & I lean that way. Then she's on a diagonal and I support her with which ever side she's nursing ons arm. I tend to bring that sides leg up to prop my arm on since it gets tired. lol So in the end all I'm really doing is supporting her head and making sure she doesn't roll. If that makes sense at all. lol

  • This is definetly the period of distracted nursing! Ellie is always pulling off and smiling I often have to make a point of not making eye contact with her to get the feed completed!

I cross my legs, with the opposite leg then the side I am nursing on on top and use that as a seat for her bum then I just support her upper half. I know a lot of people also like a straddle like position once baby has better head control, baby sitting on your lap facing you.

  • I usually put a pillow under the arm that is holding his head.  His butt is on my lap and his legs are off to the side. I still hold him belly to belly mostly and I think that helps a lot.  But, we nurse side lying a lot, it is his favorite way to fall asleep for naps/bed.

I hear you on eating time is playtime though.  Eden never did this at this age, she was much older.  I can't say or do anything while nursing or else she get distracted.  It's very difficult when his sibs are around, too.

  • Last night I knew ds had to be really hungry because we were shopping and we didn't get home till after the normal time he went to bed and he wasn't happy. Well after and 3 mins of eating he started playing the whole look up and smile game. I just wanted him to eat because I knew he was gonna wake up hungry... And he did. No advise here. Just a , I know what you mean on that part. I still use the boppy because it playces him high enough to reach my boob even though his legs hang off of it now.

Good info thanks!  I kept trying to have her straddle and face me, but she doesn't like it.  Maybe I will try it again in the future.

  • Violet has started to get really distracted during nursing too! She'll see something and go to look at it and take my nip with her. Ow! (It's actually really funny though.)

No ideas to share on positioning, but my mom suggested that I try nursing her in a dark, quiet room with less distraction so she can focus.
