S/O - Newborn outfits..how long?

This is mainly for STM's - How long did your  LO wear newborn sized outfits? I just cut the tags off of everything (like 10 minutes ago) and didn't think it through. We only have maybe 20 items that are newborn sized (outfits, sleepers and onesies). I know some people have bigger/smaller babies so that is going to affect your answer but am looking for an average.

i know if we have a monster baby he won't be able to fit in them and those will go to my friend who is pregnant with a boy as well. So not a total loss...

Thanks!

Re: S/O - Newborn outfits..how long?

  • DS was 7lbs 12 oz when he was born he worn the few nb things I had for maybe 2 weeks. I haven't purchased much for this LO yet, I have a sprinkle in a few weeks but I don't plan on buying any nb unless I need it. I will send my mom shopping if I need it.

  • Our DD was 7 lb 7 oz when she was born and somewhat slow to grow, I assume because I BF her. Her cousin was bron about the same time and was formula fed and gained weight faster.

So, that being said, she wore the NB (like carter's has) for a couple of weeks but she was in 0-3 month size for longer than 3 months.

  • I'm glad you asked this because I'm wondering the same thing :)  I doubt our baby boy will even wear newborn clothes but I want to bring at least one outfit to the hospital just in case!

DS was 9lb at birth but lost a lot and wasn't quite back to his birth weight at 2 weeks (what is recommended). I know he was still able to wear his NB clothes at Christmas but not much after. I would say he was about 10-12lb when he stopped wearing them.

  • Depends on the baby really, my oldest guy was 7lbs 1oz, and he was out of them by 6weeks, and my younger guys was 6lbs3oz, and he probably got about 8weeks out of them.

  • DD was 7lbs 4oz and wore newborn for about 6 weeks.

  • This is reminding me that I threw a bunch of things in the washer on Saturday and I didn't move it to the dryer.  Ugh.

I figured I'd only wash the items I couldn't return if baby didn't wear them.

Anything new with tags I'm holding onto in case the baby is born too big for the items.

  • Depends on the LO. My ds was a month early and newborns were too big. He stayed in the newborn size for 3 months.

  • DS was 8lb 8 oz and never wore them.

This is dependent on the child... my son was breastfed and he was above his birth weight at 10 days and was the fattest little baby on the block til he started crawling. :)

  • DD was 7 lbs even and wore nb size for the first couple months, depending on the brand.

  • Thanks for all the replies! I don't feel as bad now about ripping the tags off :) I am definitely in a mood of getting shiit together today and couldn't help myself!

  • DD1 was 7lbs1oz at birth and wore them for about a month. Some stuff she grew out of sooner..depends on the brand. Carters runs a little bigger, Gerber smaller. DD2 was 7lbs11oz at birth and wore them for about 3 weeks tops.

  • DS was born at 7 lbs 4 oz & was discharged at 6 lbs 12 oz. He quickly regained weight, though. He was on NB size about 3 weeks, I think.

  • It really depends on your baby. DD wore NB size from July-Sept.

  • DD was just over 9 pounds. I didn't get her any newborn clothes. If she had any, it came from my baby shower. She wasn't in them long. A month a the very most.

  • DS was born 3 weeks early and weighed exactly 6 pounds, so we actually bought him a few preemie outfits after he was born because NB clothes were huge on him.  After wearing preemie clothes for a week or two he then wore NB for a couple of months.

Not very long - he was 9 lbs when he was born & did fit into most of them - minus Gerber.  I have no idea where they get their sizing from.  Anyway - he outgrew them length wise before he did width wise.
