Baby wearing side-eye?

I have a ring sling and an infantino carrier...I like them both, for different reasons and wear both of them often. I feel like whenever I wear the ring sling, everyone goes ga-ga over it, and swoons over how cute the baby looks, how comfy she looks, etc...but whenever I wear the carrier I get the vibe that ppl are giving me the side-eye, and won't say anything about the baby. It happened tonight when I went grocery shopping and I thought it was interesting...any of you ladies run into this?

Re: Baby wearing side-eye?

  • I don't use a carrier, but I do use a ring sling.

Everyone that has said something loves the sling.  I haven't noticed any side eye-ing.  They do look very comfy in the sling.

Is LO riding facing in or out on the carrier.  It is hard to see the baby facing in.

  • Maybe people are just used to seeing carriers and not so used to slings. Or, like me, you feel self-conscious using a carrier b/c it's not the cool way to babywear. lol. If that is the case, just be glad you don't have a Bjorn. All the AP moms are probably seizing at the sight of me.

LOL. I don't wear her often, but I used the Boba at the supermarket the other day and got a lot of nice comments.

  • I usually have her face towards me, so that might be it...whenever DH wears her in the carrier, everyone goes so crazy about how adorable they look, but I think just bc seeing a man wear a baby is so precious.

I kind of also was thinking that ring slings look a little more motherly and soft, whereas the carrier looks a little more sterile with the buckles and all that...just an interesting observation, but it might be in my head!

Lol so true- I do flaunt it a little more when I'm ring slingin'!

  • Why would AP moms care about the baby bjorn?? And I saw something else about AP's not liking the outward facing position? Dont get it.

The bjorn carriers supposedly aren't very supportive and can cause hip problems in the babies, also front facing in any carrier is not recommended because of the way the baby's legs sit.

What will happen to their legs? How come they feature these positions on the baby carriers? Even my moby shows how to do that position, on the instruction booklet thing.
  • I haven't found a difference in people's responses whether I'm wearing DS in a sling or my Beco or Boba carriers. They alllllwwwayyss stop to talk to me. It can make getting through a store a slow process.

Popular demand. Many parents would buy a carrier that can face out rather than one that can't if they are unaware of the problems facing out can pose.

I had NO idea front facing was unsafe! This is the only way LO likes to be carried. Even when I'm not wearing her and just holding her, she hates facing in, and will scream and wiggle until I let her face out. She loves looking around....hmm, not sure what to do as wearing her out is the only way I can go out and do things....she even falls asleep facing out. How horrible of a mom would I be to keep doing it? Any other thoughts/opinions? I will ask my ped at her next appointment

  • Is the Infantino a crotch dangler? I confess I side eye those, all I can think is how numb my vag would be if I was hanging like that. I get more "weird" comments about the sling, around here most people use Ergos and Bobas so the community is used to it.

  • I don't think occasionally facing out is going to ruin your kid's hips forever and make them hate you. =D However, most of the carriers that can be used facing out aren't really optimal for facing in, either.

I wear Sadie in a woven wrap, and she is by far happiest when she can see around. She really likes being on my back looking over my shoulder, and if she's on my chest facing in, she'll usually turn her head so she can see.

This may sound stupid, but how do you get her on your back? And how do you get her off? Does it require the help of another person? I have this imagine in my head that something would happen to Eden if she was on my back and I wouldn't know because I can't see her. I might not be giving my instincts enough credit, but I've always pictured it as impossible. I'd also be worried that she'd poo all over my back and I'd walk around sporting a PooBlouse.

  • The first few times I got her up there, I had my husband as a spotter, just to make sure I didn't drop her. It's really way less terrifying than it sounds, I promise!

I usually lay the wrap down on the couch/bed and put her in the middle. Then I take the top edge on either side of her and hold it, and grab the bottom edge in between her legs, so I have three pieces of fabric in my hand. Then I lift her over my shoulder while I hold her butt. It's not the easiest thing to put into words, I guess. To get her down I slowly feed slack across my back and lower her down into my arm and around to the front.

Since she's smushed up against me, I can feel her every movement. I know exactly when she falls asleep and when she starts to wake up.

And regarding the poo...yeah. It can happen. Catastrophically. But you'll know it when it happens. And you realize that everyone needs a shower (somehow even including the four year old that wasn't even in the room when the poomergency happened). Thankfully she's only had a blowout at home.

  • I have two carriers but every time i try to use them, Lou just looks so awkward in them and not comfortable so i always just take him out.

  • Due to a lot of friends of mine having had babies already, I have three bjorns (!), an ergo, a moby and a couple of slings. I never could get into the slings because it felt weird like she was going to just fall out. THe moby I like but it's so much WORK and I hate to go in public with it becuase it starts to loosen and it's not like I can set her down anywhere while I figure out re-doing it!

The ergo is my favorite for comfort and of course good for her because of the ergonomic position.

However, unless it's nap time she is totally not into facing my chest, therefore I use the bjorn for awake wearing time. Also I love the ease of the bjorn it seems so easy to get on. But I know it's bad for her,and it hurts my back to carry her in that more than the ergo.

I wonder if I can start putting her on my back now, I feel weird about that too like I wouldn't be able to get her on and off me easily when alone.

Nobody ever gives me the side eye from baby wearing, I guess it might depend on where you live? I live outside of boston, everyone I know wears/wore their babies. People generally just say "how cute"! when she is in the bjorn facing out. And when have her in the ergo they don't say anything, probably because they can't see her.

  • Oh. I thought forward facing was frowned on because you are walking the baby AWAY from you. "Why are you pushing the baby AWAY??" lol

I learned on this board about not wearing J facing out in the Moby.  He loves it so much, though, so I still do it.  I only do it for a limited time, though--maybe a half hour walk.
