2nd Trimester

Dentist visits?

Anyone been to the dentist after 21 weeks?  After 20 weeks, we are all told to limit how long we stay on our backs.  Does this stop you from going to the dentist b/c of how long you have to lay back?

Re: Dentist visits?

  • I'm planning on going next month which is my 6 month cleaning. They don't lie you completely down and the cleaning doesn't take all that long.  Usually doctor's recommend cleanings since teeth & gums can become an issue in pregnancy.

  • You are still slightly reclined at the dentist. You should avoid being FLAT on your back. A slight incline or a small tilt to the right or left is fine.

  • If you let them know they won't recline you as much and you can ask for breaks. Definitely don't skip the dentist because of this.

  • I still sleep on my back and lay on my back often. I have a dentist appointment in just over a week.
  • How long do you lay on your back at the dentist? I sit up most of the time. They tilt the chair back when they cleaned and when he checked me over. I doubt it was more than 15 minutes at a time. I went to the dentist when I was 30 something weeks.

  • I just went last week at 27 weeks. They were done in maybe 10-15 minutes. They barely reclined me. And constantly asked me if I was okay. The dentist said he doesn't like to see women in their first trimester, but talked about how important it is to have dental cleanings. My gums did bleed more than usual, but he said it was fine, that the pregnant women he sees typically have a little bleeding.
  • I went in for my 6 month cleaning with DD.  It sucked.  Brushing my teeth through my whole pregnancy sucked though.  It really didn't take long so I just did it to get it over with.  I don't think its a huge issue.  DD is just fine!

When I was pg with DD, I went to the dentist around 36 weeks.  The hygienist asked how I was on my back and if I'd be able to lay there.  I said I did okay.  She waited until the last second to lay the chair back and as soon as she was done she immediately put me up.  Then when the dentist came in, he lowered the chair again.

  • I've been to the dentist through both pregnancies and the only issue that ever came up was that i had a consent form from my OBGYN saying I was ok to receive dental treatment. Make sure your dentist doesn't require that. My doctors have NEVER told me "not to lay on your back" with any pregnancy. They tell me to listen to your body and it will tell you when you need to move around.

  • I will be going for a cleaning when I'm 20-something weeks.  I was already told that for that visit they just won't recline me as much as they normally would and will also be checking with me to make sure I'm doing alright.

Please don't skip the dentist just because you're pregnant.

  • You don't lay flat on your back at the dentist, and if you're uncomfortable they can probably adjust the chair in such a way to make it better for you while they do the cleaning.  As long as they don't take x-rays, you'll be fine.

Gingivitis during pregnancy can get bad, if you're due for a cleaning you should definitely go!!

  • I went at 26 weeks.  They obviously knew I was pregnant and were very accommodating.  They didn't put my chair all the way down and even asked if I wanted a pillow under my one side if I was uncomfortable.  They just did the basic cleaning and will save xrays or anything else until my next appointment in 9 months.

I've worked on 39+ week pregnant women before.  They should definitely check your BP before the appointment, make sure you get frequent breaks (every 15 minutes) to sit up, and have you leaning on your left side a little bit if possible.

  • I've always been laid back, for the whole time.  Usually about 45 minutes or more depending on how deep a cleaning they were doing ( I'm really sensitive.)  But I always get up with a neck ache and have to take a moment b/c I'm dizzy sitting after laying on my neck and the back of my head.
