Finally getting good naps!

I don't want to jinx myself, but after 5 days in a row, our longest stretch ever of good naps (actually I don't think we've ever had more than one random nap here and there), I am hoping we found a solution!

My daughter was taking no more than 15-20 minute naps since she started sleeping all night at around 5 months. We just figured it was her, but it has gotten more and more miserable as she's gotten older, busier, and now she only takes one nap instead of 2. 15 minutes is not enough nap for the whole day!

I went back to Ferber, reread the section on naps. He points out that while a lot of kids can sleep more, you shouldn't expect all children to sleep more than 12-14 hours total in a 24 hour period. Lexi was easily getting 12-14 hours at night, going down around 6! (Because of course with no nap she was READY by 6). We started pushing her a half hour at a time, and now she's in bed around 730 or 8, so sleeping more like 11-12 hours. And voila. 1-3 hour naps every day since we backed it out.

  • I'm glad its working.  I don't know how we'd make it without naps.

  • Awesome!!  Naps were our hurdle too for the longest time and I think we've got them mostly down now too.  It's such a huge relief, isn't it??

  • That is about our schedule too.  Luckily the timing seemed to always work for us but some days were really short.  The trick for us, was that I found that I was allowing her to wake to early from her naps.  If she wakes up fussy, she's not ready to wake.  So I had to resort back to CIO for her naps.  I would go in at intervals if she woke, she always goes down fine, with no problems at all, so I would just let her cry a little bit more and go check on her or pat her back.  It seemed to finally work.  Nap time is bliss in our house - I get at least a couple hours from DD#2 and still get 2-3, sometimes 4 hours from my FOUR year old AND....they nap at the same time.  Ahhhhhhhhh.
