Working Moms

Did I just get "mommy-tracked"?

So, while I was on maternity leave, one of my bosses called me and offered me a different position within our department. I think the intention behind it was good. The thinking was that it's sort of "mommy friendly", because there's no travel, no crazy schedule, etc.

I agreed to the position change when it was offerred. Now that I'm actually in the position, I hate it. I am doing ZERO legal work. (I'm an attorney, btw). The team that I was moved to has no attorneys in higher positions on it, so there's no room for me to advance on this team.

I never should have agreed to it. I totally feel like I was rubed. Why oh Why did I say "yes"? I know we have empty positions on different teams, one of which I would really like to be on. I know the manager would be happy to have me. We've worked together before. This is not what I went to law school for. Do I say something?

TIA

  •  Say something.  I would leave the mommy bit aside but express how you'd love to join the team and why you're a good fit.

  • Definitely say something.  You have legitimate concerns about your future and potential for growth.  Plus there is an opening in another department...capitalize on that.  Good luck!

Oh and I agree...leave the mommytrack talk out of it.

  • I don't think you "got mommy-tracked," I think you accepted a position that is more traditionally "mommy-friendly." Kwim? It doesn't sound like they were out to get you, (as you said, you felt like the intention was good) you were offered the position knowing it was different from your old job and you said yes.

But if you hate it, definitely say something! If there are openings that would better suit you that's awesome, go for it. You never know, if you leave your current position, there may be a candidate hoping and praying for a "mommy track" job. Win win =)

  • Yes!  No need to be miserable at least 1/3 of your life. Talk to your manager and the manager of the other team you're interested in working with.
