Preemies

Do you delay vaccines?

I hadn't thought about this...but do any of you delay vaccines before your LO was premie? mine is almost due for his two month vaccines, but he was a full month early. i guess I need to read up on it to see..but did any of you delay the vaccines, and why?

(I'm not trying to tart a vaccine war. We are a pro-vaccine family and nothing is going to change my mind on it, so please don't debate with me)

Re: Do you delay vaccines?

  • My son was released today from the NICU and they said that they do vaccines based on when he was born not his gestational/adjusted age - so my LO is due for his 2 months in 2 weeks, you can always check with your pediatrician though for sure.

  • My girls got their first set of vaccines while they were still in the NICU. The drs used their actual age, not adjusted.

  • My lo hasn't reached 2 months yet but I already have his 2 month visit planned and I plan on getting his vaccines.  My ped said to go by his actual age.

  • My son was 6 weeks early. We have not delayed vaccines yet nor do we plan to. He may be tiny, but he's strong and stable enough to handle them.

We didn't delay them either and she has gotten them all based on her actual age instead of adjusted age, despite being 3.5 months early! They did wait to give her her first Hep B shot (usually t birth) until her 2 month shots because she was only 1 pound 12 ounces at birth.

  • No, we have given them on schedule as advised my the NICU and their pedi.  They received their 2 month vaccines in the NICU and were under and around 5 lbs at the time.
  • I asked my pedi and she said they don't normally do delayed schedules for preemies as late as DS (34w5days).  He has had all his shots on a normal schedule and been fine.

  • We did them on schedule per our neo's recommendation despite her being a 1lb 7oz micropreemie.  I am pro vaccine but it did make me quite nervous to have my 2lb 14oz baby getting her 2 month shots.  While she was in the NICU they broke the shots apart as much as possible and gave them to her over the course of a week for both her  2 month and 4 month shots.

  • No, it's by actual age.  Preemies have compromised immune systems, so they are more important than ever!

We also vax according to actual age (and she was born 2 months early). I was told it's even more important to keep on schedule with a preemie, because their immune systems are underdeveloped.

  • Actual age, thank goodness. There was a Pertussis outbreak in my state and a baby died about a month before the girls were due for it...I was counting the days until they could get their shots.

  • Our pedi vaccinated preemies based on their actual age as well.  We didn't give the hep B vaccine until her 2 month appointment, but the rest were on schedule.  She did fine with no reaction whatsoever.
