WWYD: amniotic fluid

As I told you guys yesterday on someone else thread they keep telling me my levels are normal when they are measuring under 5cm. Today baby a's was at 3.7cm and b's was at 3.2cm. I really don't know what to do. I'm not sure if she's just measuring in horrible spots or what. Going in to L&D just gives me the on call from my practice so not sure if that would do anything either. The boys still are very active and pass their bios and nsts every week. Curious on what you ladies would do.

    Was that the total amniotic fluid index (AFI) level or just the deepest vertical pocket (DVP)? The DVP is just one measurement of four that add up to the total AFI. Those sound like fine values for DVP but for AFI, to me, they are quite low and dangerous. I'm not a doctor though. I would specifically ask them to clarify what those numbers are. And say that you know normal is 5-25 so why is 3 ok?

    The stupid tech doesn't even look for the deepest pocket she just finds one real quick and measures it. Then that number she puts in as the AFI. I hate this chick with a passion. I'm really thinking she's not doing her job right. Anytime I bring up a problem I have about a staff member to my on she gets all defensive. I'm so glad im almost done and don't have to deal with this bs anymore.

    If she is just measuring ONE spot per baby, that is not the AFI. So if that is just ONE measurement from each baby then those numbers are likely fine. AFI is the sum of four measurements per baby. Also they don't look for the deepest vertical pocket specifically, they just take one measurement from each of four quadrants per baby and the largest number is then called the deepest vertical pocket. Double check if those 3.x numbers are only one measurement per baby, which is NOT the AFI.

    If she's just measuring one pocket then as long as the pocket is at least 2 cm it's fine. Sounds like she's doing her job correctly. I wouldn't call her a stupid tech. I'm sure she has more training in ultrasound than you do, and she is checking the well being of your children. Sorry, as a tech myself it just rubs me the wrong way when people act like they can do my job without the years of training and experience.

    I have way more issues than this with her. I have no doubt she has more training than me in this department. I wouldn't complain about her if this was something by itself. But ty for clarifying on the measurement issues.

    If you are truly uncomfortable with the ultrasound tech at your office, request from your OB that future ultrasounds are done outpatient at the hospital. 

    I've tried to get them switched over the last few weeks to do them with my MFM. Who is more than willing to do them and would prefer to do them but my on won't send the order over to her. Its been an ongoing battle for things to be done right the last few weeks. I just keep having a count down of how many appointments are left at this point.(which is only 3 thank goodness)
