Parenting after a Loss

How often are your LO's nursing/taking a bottle?

Just curious.. LO is 2 weeks old.. he's taking a 3oz bottle roughly every 4 hours.. sometimes he'll go a little longer at night, sometimes a little shorter during the day..

Just wondering if anyone else's baby is doing the same.. I keep hearing they should be eating every 2-3 hours.. and, when I was nursing, he would.. but now that I'm bottle feeding, he's content to go longer.. I think it seems silly to wake him up if he's sleeping and content..

What's your LO's feeding schedule look like??

At that age DD nursed every 2 hours. Sometimes more frequently. When we gave her a bottle it was 1-2oz. He may be going longer between feeds because 3oz is probably more than he was getting while nursing.

  • Breast milk is digested faster than formula. He is probably just feeling full longer.

  • Ditto everything PP said.

As long as he has good wet/dry diapers and is gaining weight I wouldn't worry about it.

  • At that age D was nuring every 2 hours (at most) during the day and every 3/4 at night.  He's BF though, so it would be more frequently than FF (the whole digest quicker thing a pp mentioned).

Has your LO reached his birth weight yet?  If he has, as long as he is keeping up with the diaper count and is gaining well, you're probably fine to feed as needed.

  • Just to clarify.. it;s 3oz of pumped breastmilk.. occasionally I will supplement with 1oz formula 2 oz pumped milk.. he just has a strong appetite I guess.. he was 7-9 at birth.. dropped to 7-4 by day 5.. by day 11 he was 7-12 (with a diaper on).. he's gaining weight fine.. just making sure its ok that he is content going that long between feeds.. thanks ladies!

  • I wouldn't worry. DS is nearly EBF and he's always eaten every 2-4 hours. He's also been a big eater from birth as well. I'm talking sometimes taking bm bottles with twice as many oz as recommended for his age. He's just a healthy, bigger baby. Born 8 lbs and now close to 15 at 3 months.

DD was on a very similiar schedule at that time.  I'm an EPer and she would drink from the bottle 2-3 oz every 2..5 - 3 hours right from the beginning.  She also slept for like 4 hours at a time regularly from about 2 weeks on.

As long he's gaining weight and has the correct amount of wet/dirty diapers, do what is right for you and your baby.

  • DD was a snacker. She never took more than 2oz until she was 2m (adjusted).

Just go off LO's cues. What/how frequently he's eating now will change. A lot.
