I am about 7 weeks pregnant. I am currently on vacation in the Outer Banks. We rent the same home every year, and rent it right before we leave the year prior for the next year (for example, before we leave this year, we rent the house for the next year). This guarantees us the house for the next year. This particular house rents out quickly because it's right on the water, has a boat dock, and is dog-friendly. We have to pay a (usually non-refundable) deposit. So that's why I am thinking about this now.
My question is - I will have a 4-5 month old when we go next year. It is a 7-8 hour drive down here. Knowing what you know about your babies at this age, would you stick closer to home for vacation next year, or go ahead and go? I also worry a bit because OBX is a very outside-oriented vacation for us, and I'm not sure how comfortable I'd feel with a baby that age on the beach.
How did you handle your first summer vacation with a new baby?
Re: Silly question perhaps...
I'd go. We live 7-8 hours away from both of our parents, and have made both of the trips without an issue.
You are definitely not supposed to use sunscreen, even baby sunscreen, on babies under 6 months. You need to just keep them out of the sun completely.

!!!THIS! Also, Ditto to PP, I'd go. You might have to rethink some of your outdoor activities but I don't see why you couldn't stick to most of them
Thank you ! It's nice to hear that some of you have had success with long car rides. I think we'll do it!
To be honest, I haven't been out in the sun much either this year because I have m/s - blech! So we're learning new ways to have fun on vacay anyway - resting and relaxing

FYI, this is false. That guidance is a cover their ass measure. There are parents out there who don't use common sense and don't realize that shade is the absolute best. You cover/shade baby as best you can but of course they're allowed to be outdoors and if they're at risk of a sunburn, no doctor will tell you that it is better tan using sunBLOCK (not sunscreen - blocks are physical, screens are chemical)
My daughter is 4 1/2 months and we just drove from florida to north carolina saturday. It was a total of 13 hours in the car. We stopped 3 times to feed her and get her out and eat/gas up. She did great! I also have the 2 older boys in the back to help with pacifiers and such.
I say do it!
TBH, I feel like the drive could be miserable. We went to a vacation spot about a 10 hour drive away, but opted to fly this year.
We also went with my inlaws, who helped with Mila. Regardless, it was nothing like the trips I took in the past.
Now, M was only 3 months when we went, so prob taking a 5 month old would be slightly different. I think Breastfeeding vs formula feeding would make a difference with the ease of things too.
Im not saying dont go - I'm just saying realize that if you're used to doing outdoor activities the whole day, it won't be like that with your baby... ESP if it's super hot outside like it was when we went.

I really think it depends on the baby. I would feel completely comfortable traveling with B for a long period of time, but I don't know if that rings true for everyone.
By the way CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! I'm so thrilled for you.
