Trouble TTC

Moving to BC from the UK

Hi everyone,

I've not been around for a while as I've been taking a break from treatment to try and lose the lbs I gained while on Clomid before trying injections or ivf.

My hubby and I applied for Permanent Residency for Canada 7 years ago and we are finally at the stage where we can move over now  (super excited!)

My question is this... Can anybody tell me what the process is for treatment in BC?  I'm going to be living in the Nanoose area if anybody can recommend a dr that I should contact in the first instance that would be great!

I appreciate any help you can give me as I'm sure the health system is very different to the one we have currently.

Thanks as always!

Kx

Re: Moving to BC from the UK

  • Hi! I haven't been active on this board as of late so I hope you dont mind my reply. I live in Lantzville (almost Nanoose). Welcome to the island!

There is only one fertility specialist in the island, Dr. Stephen Hudson in Victoria. He has a website, his office is called Victoria Ferility Centre. Your other choice is in Vancouver. There is Genesis and a few others. I myself have found it too difficult to schedule ferry crossings with work and appointments so I see Dr. Hudson. He is a very compassionate and caring dr.

You will need a referral from a medical doctor ( your family doctor) in order for the consultation and other fees to be covered by BC health care. But I believe you can make an appt directly if you are prepared to pay OOP.

Understandably, being the only specialist on the island it may take a few months to get into the office. Once you have a treatment plan they will get you in ASAP but I think I waited about 4 months for my appt after my referral.

Hope that helps a bit. PM me if you want any details or if you'd like to get together for a coffee sometime and discuss IF or anything.

    Hope your move goes well!

  • Good luck on your move!  I live in Alberta and I just wanted to let you know I'm dealing with a BC clinic since the wait times in BC are so much shorter than the ones in Alberta, so you're lucky!

  • Thanks ladies :o)

We're certainly both very excited to be able to make this move at long last although daunting having to think about figuring out everything from scratch again ... Especially when we have such a comprehensive health service in the uk and I am already being treated by a consultant ... BUT ... We'll get there :o) especially if I can pick your brains :o)

Island Girl ... We're practically neighbours so I'll def' have to take you up on the offer of meeting up for a coffee :o)

Am I right in saying that fertility treatment isn't covered in Canada so would all be self funded?

     Thaaaaaanks again :o)

  • Testing, HSG ect, bloodwork, ultrasounds and dr. visits are covered but unless you have some personal insurance or through your employer, all treatment and meds are OOP.

I just had my first IUI, which cost me $400 + $80 for the trigger and $45 for five days worth of Femera 5mg (for which my DHs work insurance will reimburse me for)

I think costs may vary by office, but procedure costs are outlined on Dr. Hudson's website.

    See you soon!
