2nd Trimester

When did you feel the flutters/kicks?

I haven't felt anything. I'm only 17 weeks and figured I wouldn't feel kicks or flutters for a while, but more and more I seem to be hearing women saying they're feeling flutters at 15 weeks, 13 weeks, even earlier. It's starting to get me a little worried like something is wrong with my LO and I'm behind. Also, is there some big difference between flutters and kicks? I thought flutters were any sort of early fetal movement, but I don't know how different they feel or how to tell the difference between them. If they every start (I want kicks! Crying )

Re: When did you feel the flutters/kicks?

  • I am a FTM and I did not feel anything significant until week 20. I was worried but my doctor kept telling me this was normal.  I would feel something earlier around 17 weeks but I was not sure if it was the baby or gas because it was so faint.  Now I feel the baby kicking me and they are strong enough that my belly moves a little bit. DH has not felt them yet. I will say I was with you, I wanted to feel the kicking. Now its a little distracting when I am trying to get anything done. I end up just staring at my belly and laughing.

  • Don't let it worry you.  Your placenta could be in an anterior position, which can act as a padding for the kicks and flutters.  Because of that, you might not feel kicks until 21-22 weeks or later.  This is how my placenta is, and at 20 weeks, I'm just now starting to feel movement. It's worth the wait though! :)

  • I've been surprised at all of the reports of early flutter-feeling!  I haven't felt anything yet and am refusing to let myself get worked up about it until after 20 weeks!

  • You might be mistaking them for gas or hunger pains, but not everyone feels them early on so don't worry. Every woman and every pregnancy is different. There is a big difference (at least for me between flutters and kicks.) I think I started feeling distinct, make my belly move kicks around 17 weeks, but I'm very petite. I know many women who didn't feel that until well over 20 weeks so try not to worry. Your LO will just get more and more active, believe me! As your baby gets bigger, the kicks and movements will be very discernible. Now I can sit and watch my tummy move all over.

  • 2nd or more moms feel them sooner.  Those are probably the ones that are feeling them earlier.

  • I was worrying about it too.  I felt muscle quivering from 16 weeks but only happen in every few days and with one to two times only.  Sometimes harder like a kick and sometimes softer like the movement.  But not very often until yesterday at 21weeks 3 days, I finally feel more often of the movements.  DH also started to feel it the first time yesterday.  I heard some can be here very early on but the latest can be as late as 25 weeks.  If you still have concern, you may want to contact your OB.

  • I've been feeling the same way so thanks for writing this post!  I have not yet felt anything, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we're each getting swift kicks in the ribs :-)
  • I didn't feel movement until 19.5 weeks. For most women I know in real life, it seems like 20 weeks is average. I don't know why women on the bump seem to have an earlier average for feeling movement.

  • I felt my first movement at around 16 weeks, but I didn't start to feel regularly until about 19 or 20. Sometimes I still can't tell if I have to fart or if its the baby :P Don't feel worried.

I've heard this a lot about STMs.  Apparently it's because they know what they're feeling based on past experience, whereas FTMs are mistaking the movements for gas and muscle twitches as first.  I felt something at 8 weeks that felt exactly like the movements I'm feeling now, but aside from that one time, I didn't feel anything significant until about two weeks ago, at 19 weeks, and even that took a few times before I could distinguish between kicks and gas.  Now at 21 weeks it's really obvious what's my body and what's the baby, especially since I started seeing the kicks from outside because I can relate the feeling of the kicks to what I'm seeing.

I wouldn't stress if you're not feeling them yet, you're still in that "normal" window, plus if your baby is laying weird, you just may not feel them yet.  As long as you see the little guy moving around on the u/s and can hear the heartbeat, I wouldn't worry.  You'll definitely know it once you feel it a few times!

  • Around 14 weeks I felt flutters, but I'm a STM.  I haven't felt kicks yet, and the movement I feel isn't always consistent from day to day.

Don't worry. I know that's easier said than done. I'm a FTM and I didn't feel definite movement till about 22 weeks and I don't have a anterior placenta. It was hard to know if I was feeling flutters or other bodily functions before that. Try to relax, movement will come soon.

  • I never really felt the flutters.  At least I don't think I did.  I started feeling real kicks around 21 weeks or so.  Now I swear there's a future soccer player in there, he kicks me all day!

  • Flutters at 16w5d, and I've felt them a little bit every day - definitely not kicks yet but I know it's not gas! Flutters feel more like a muscle spasm almost and while I haven't felt kicks yet I assume they'll feel more direct.
  • Well I think I felt a kick last night, it was like a little thump between my belly button and pubic bone, but haven't felt anything since. I really have no idea if it was movement or not or if just reading about everyone else's is making me think about it.

  • Well i never felt those "Flutters" But i felt the kicking at the end of 18 weeks so you should feel them real soon.
  • FTM and I felt flutters around end of week 17 and than starting getting more movement and actual kicks (a couple have been so strong DH has felt them!) this week (19) and now it's consistently everyday. You will feel them soon :)

  • I'm a FTM and looking back I felt a little movement on occasion starting at 16 weeks but it felt a lot like gas and was so rare that I wasn't sure about it at the time. I felt the first real movement that I was sure was movement and kicks around 18 weeks but it was still only a few times a day. Then at 20 weeks he decided he was going to kick and move all day long and make sure I felt everything.

  • I didn't feel anything until 21 weeks. That was just flutters in the beginning. Now at 27 weeks I've just started to feel definite kicks and feel him move more often. I was starting to get worried.. And feel left out.. But it will happen!!!

  • I haven't felt anything very significant, but during the 17th week, I noticed little nudges or pokes that didn't seem like they were ME moving.  Felt like something else, inside of me.  So I assume that's the babe.  I'm 18 weeks now.

  • With my first, I felt nothing until 34 weeks. I had an anterior placenta and never felt the early movements, I just woke up one day and felt kicks!

With this one, I am starting to feel a rolling sensation-almost like the feeling you get in your tummy when you first start going down a hill on a roller coaster-but not as strong. I'm not 100% sure it was baby-but the only time I have ever felt like that when NOT on a roller coaster was last time I was pregnant and baby would flip over. Of course those were much stronger since I was further along...so who knows!  I am assuming that I felt baby, but I know the later kicks will be unmistakable. Don't worry too much-but try laying down flat on your back after you eat to see if you can feel fluttering. One day you will, and know 100% it was LO!!

  • This is my first pregnancy, i started feeling flutters around 14/15 weeks for sure and maybe earlier. Usually it happens when I'm laying down on my back and relaxed but I've also felt them when I've been standing still for a while.
However I'm 17 weeks and like, three days and I have yet to have felt significant kicks so that may take longer.
I've been told it depends on the mother's body type and body awareness level before pregnancy as well as the individual baby. (Some just aren't big movers at first) But if you're like me and were really sensitive about your body and tuned in to it's happenings before, you should notice. Just take the time to relax for a little while

I know what it feels like when I have gas, it is not the same at all

  • I just started feeling light thumps every now and then, but honestly if no one had told me what they would feel like I would have thought it was just my stomach making noises. They are very light and then every so often I will feel little bubbles or it seems like my tunny is growling but I know it is not. They are very easy to miss in my opinion. But I literally just started felling them this week. I am looking forward to the hard kicks! :)

Because it's an average.  Some feel movement earlier than 20 weeks, some later.  With DD#1 I didn't feel anything until around 19 weeks.  I haven't felt anything this pregnancy yet.

  • I felt the first little ::tap tap tap:: at 17w on the nose. Sporadic movement for a couple of weeks. Then around 20w I started feeling hard kicks, & now he can move my belly on the outside.
