September 2012 Moms

I'm totally judging my friend...

She had pics up of her recent canoe trip that they took their daughter (3 1/2 yrs) on for the first time.  She is sitting in the canoe, on a little kid folding chair, with NO life vest on....I know that I'm over-protective, but I think having a life vest on your child at all times while on a moving water vessel is quite standard.  Is this too something that I am overly cautious about??  Opinions please.

Re: I'm totally judging my friend...

  • I would no questions have a life jacket on my kid. I'm assuming she can't swim? If not, there should be no question in my mind. Even if they can swim a kid that age IMO should have a life jacket on.

  • I spent a lot of my childhood sailing with my grandpa and it was unacceptable to be anywhere near the boat/water without having life vest on. Just not worth the risk.

  • That kid should have had a lifevest on.  If they lived here and a conservation officer saw it they would be paying a $300 fine.  Any child 10 and under must wear a lifevest at all times here when around water.  IMO that is just plain stupidity and lack of common sense.  Especially since they were in a canoe.  Really?  What if the friggin thing tips?

  • We have a pool and we don't allow kids in there without a life vest. It's just a safety issue for us as well. Makes me feel better their parents are in the water when they are as well as having a life vest. At the end of the season we always buy a few of them to keep at our house.
  • I am judging your friend right now.  Not putting a life vest on ANYONE (let alone a 3 y/o) in a boat it careless, and just plain stupid!

  • Umm..even if the kid can swim, she should still have a life jacket on!

  • I grew up on the water.  I'd judge anyone who allowed a child (doesn't matter if they can swim) on the water without a life jacket.  I'm pretty sure I HAD to wear one at all times on the boat until I was 14 or 15.

  • Um, judge away. That is awful. Ditto others that children, even if they can swim, should absolutely be wearing a life vest. My family has a lake house and we definitely ALWAYS had to wear one until I'm thinking we were like... 12. And we were all excellent swimmers.

It doesn't matter if you can swim if the boat tips and you're knocked unconscious, or if you're far from land. Good lord.

    Hahahahahahaha awesome.

OP: That is totally unacceptible. AND sitting in a chair that could easily fall over??? WTF??

  • Our boys know that they must wear life jackets at all times when in our boat, even if it's on the trailer (which means its about to go in water). The rule on our boat is life jacket 24/7 until you can legally drive car. It was an issue with my nephew who is on swim team  (but only 7) until he was told to put it on on get off.

  • Um, I still wear a life vest when I go out on a boat. My mom's best friend's son drowned in a canal when he was only 3. You hear about people drowning all the time, children and adults alike.

OP- I judge anyone who puts their kid's life at stake like that. Accidents happen all the time. That is just horrible.

This.  My parent's have a cottage on a lake and my kids are not allowed near the dock without theirs on either.  I don't care if your kid can swim, if they are knocked over in a boat and get hit in the head, how are they going to save themselves?

Yeah, your friend is not too bright.

  • I think you sHould feel free to judge away.. I think a lifejacket is the minimum especially if they are just sitting on a kiddy chair in the canoe.. What if they had fallen in? There is a strap on the back of lifejacket a for just that reason sO you ha e something to grab onto..

  • I grew up on a lake my entire life, muddy, murky waters with lots of logs and rocks. My dad told all of us that it was the law (which was a lie) that we had to wear our life jackets on all the boats and on the dock at all times, and lifebelts until we were 12. I child can be lost in the water in a second, especially if she can't swim yet, and even if she can it is easy to get knocked out when you hit the water. I don't think your overly cautious at all, I don't think its possible to be overly cautious with your child around fire, water and electricity, they are just too deadly to mess with.

  • Wow, I'd judge your friend too.  There's no way I'd allow DS to sit on a boat of any kind without a life jacket on.  Why take the chance?

My child will be in a life jacket until I feel confident enough with his swimming skills.

  • Yeah, definitely judge-worthy. I think even older kids and adults who can swim should have lifejackets in boats bc what if you fall out and hit your head or something? Not worth the risk.
