1st Trimester

problems at six weeks

i had an ultrasound done and they said i was about six. We could see the heartbeat but we couldnt hear it so i was told to come back in a week but my doctor couldnt be there so they brought me back in two days later and the baby hadnt grown and we still couldnt hear the heartbeat. my doctor says there's a chance i could miscarry. Has anyone else gone through this please tell me there's hope. i cant imagine losing this baby is there anything i should/ shouldn't do?

Re: problems at six weeks

  • I'm a little confused because at six week you cannot hear a heartbeat, you can only see it. Which you did. The machine mimics the noise for you but nobody can actually hear it at six weeks. Did your doctor give you any more information? Did he/she do any blood work?

All of this. I don't know why your doctor would have you come back unless there was some other reason.

Sounds like you are simply getting ahead of yourself. It's far too early to hear a HB and sometimes to even see one. If what you stated was all true, I'd get a new ob.

  • I would call your doc ASAP and tell them what you think you have heard because somewhere you must have misunderstood something.  I would ask for your doctor (or the office RN) to explain again why they think you would miscarry.  From your story it just sounds like you and the OB are not on the same page.  Good luck, maybe it is nothing and you just didn't understand something they said.  If your doc really is concerned about not hearing a HB at six weeks I would consider getting a new OB.  I honestly cannot believe that there is an OB in practice though who would think this because he/she would be telling every mom at 6 weeks that something was wrong.  I think that their license wouldn't last long .......

Ditto.   Plus, there is always a margin in error in measuring growth so having only 2 days in between ultrasounds and having the dr tell you there hasn't been growth is kind of odd.

The heart beat gets fully established in the 6th week.  When I went for my appointment I was only 6w3d and the OB wanted me to come back after 8 weeks to make sure cardiac rythym was fully developed and I was beyond that risk of miscarriage.  She doesn't think that I have or will miscarried, just wants to make sure that the heart continues to grow.  Are you sure your OB wasn't saying something similar to this?

Agreed.  Like she said, you can't hear a heartbeat at 6 weeks.  I was always told that its best to hear it between the 9th and 11th weeks for the first time. Call them to get this all cleared up!  GL

  • My midwife was not concerned about miscarrying until she couldn't find a heartbeat at 10 weeks with the doppler.  Then she sent us for an u/s.  U/s at 11w1d showed a strong steady heartbeat.

You should clarify with your OB.  This seems like your OB didn't communicate clearly to you.
