That FAIL refers to me, not DD - she has been doing great when we introduce solids, but between DH's crazy work schedule and mine, we've been doing HORRIBLY at having baby-suitable foods around to introduce her to (we're doing BLW). She's 6.5 months, and I know we need to get serious about this and have her eating solids more frequently, I just can't get my act together!
Any tips on easy, healthy, slow-to-spoil foods to have on hand for DD, even for nights when DH and I eat leftover pizza and/or cereal for dinner?
Re: FAIL-ing at solids
We did alot of turkey meatballs and also plain cheese ravioli. Bananas, orange sections, cheese (slice or stick); super steamed carrots, cauliflower, or green beans, black beans and rice, egg noodles or penne w/ a little butter and parmesan cheese, bread or toast, pita bread, etc.
Heck, I've given DD a little piece of pizza to gnaw on too. Remember its just practice and fun at this age!
Take 2 hours one day (after DD goes to bed? On the weekend?) and make a bunch of things that will freeze. I made J banana oatmeal bars, applesauce muffins, and pumpkin oatmeal muffins and froze them (all made with baby cereal that he refused to eat). Pancakes are always good, and freeze well too. Toast smeared with puree (easy way to sneak in a veggie, he ate green bean toast Saturday night and loved it). Mac and cheese is a huge hit right now.
The slow cooker has become exponentially more useful to us now that we're doing solids a la BLW. With just 15 minutes of prep (mix a bunch of spices, stir it up with olive oil, then cover a hunk of meat in the spice mix - 8 hours later, volia!) in the morning, we have a dinner all 3 of us can enjoy. We just microwave some potatoes to get a side and steam some veggies (10 min maybe?).
Baby loves it, we love it, yummy & healthy dinner.
Solids doesn't mean you have to feed your baby a meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and salad:) It just means you are trying new things consistently. My baby still eats lots of purees, but I try to fit in new table foods each week too (I work full time, too, so it can be hectic). He loves bananas, sweet potatoes (real sweet potatoes, not the jar) he loves all fruit mashed up and either he eats it straight, or he'll suck it out of that little mesh container I have. I've given him bits and bites of what I'm eating like noodles and pancakes, as long as it's not salty or oily or sugary.
It will come! Don't fret. Soon your baby will be eating everything in sight, and you won't have to think about it and plan around it so much.
