September 2012 Moms

I got lectured at my OB appt today.

She was really nice about everything, but I was told to eat and rest. I've lost 4 pounds since my visit which was only about 11 days ago. I had to have blood drawn to check my thyroid and for anemia. I am freaking exhausted! It's also really hard to eat with this wheat allergy going on. I'm adapting, but it is still overwhelming to make food choices sometimes. Maybe I'll just start a diet of doritos and coke!

  • Nothing wrong with a diet to add those extra calories. :) I ended up eating a cookie a day to supplement my caloric intake. Probably not what my OB meant but its working.

Also, MH is big on getting healthy meat on my bones. Have you tried uping your protien?

Ugh, I'm sorry.  I started buying blocks of cheese and I'll just sit on the couch and eat half a block with some crackers. Then I'll eat a bowl of ice cream as my reward for eating extra calories.

  • Thanks for the ideas.

I know I should up my protein. I have no doubt that I am probably anemic since I've been on gummy prenatals. I should try adding a few high protein snacks.

Ice cream is always good! I have a few pints in the freezer. I just need to start eating them!

I didn't have any problems gaining weight with the last two babies, so I'm sure the wheat allergy is most of the problem. If I could raid a bakery right now and not get sick, I would!

  • Oh, I'm sorry!  I'm wheat-free too and now have GD, so I can't even join you on the doritos and coke diet :(  Some days it feels like I literally spend all day thinking about what I can possibly eat.  Who knew lunch could be so exhausting??

GL and eat a bowl of ice cream for me. :)

ETA: I've definitely found upping my protein helps me feel better.  One of my favorites: cheese (slice or 1/2 a string cheese), lunch meat (*gasp*), and pickle rolled up in a lettuce leaf as a snack.

  • Can you beef up dinner with some gluten free pasta? There are a couple good ones out there - look for brown rice (Tinkyada?) or quinoa (Ancient Harvest).

I hope you start to feel better!

I'm sorry! I think the only thing saving me is the chocolate bars I keep in the fridge to nibble on. I can't imagine having to cut that out, too.

It is exhausting! I absolutely hate how much time I have to spend thinking about and picking the correct foods.

  • What about the quinoa mix from Trader Joe's with some protein. I'm pretty sure it is wheat free and it is tasty. I also love their trek mixes. They are my current saving grace because of the GD and the desperate need to find protein I don't find repulsive.

  • the little boy i work with during the summer is gluten free and we made chocolate chip muffins with sprinkles they were SOO good if that helps!!! i cant think of the brand right now!!
  • I feel ya on the gluten free thing sucking. My weight gain slowed down when I went GF in April, but I didn't lose weight.

Here is a list of GF bakeries in Portland area. Maybe one is close (or close enough to stock up on amazing goodies): https://www.novativemedia.com/gluten_free/oregon-gluten-free-bakeries.php#gluten-free-bakeries

I second pp's suggestion of GF pasta. It really isn't bad and the longer you are GF the tastier it is. Ancient Harvest Quinoa pasta is my favorite, but rice pasta is also good and I can generally find it at most grocery stores. There is also rice by itself, of course.

If you go to Trader Joe's customer service, they'll actually print off a list of all the stuff they sell that is GF to make shopping easier.

Good luck getting some weight back on!!

Oh, I take an iron supplement: Slow FE. I am not anemic but my doctor suggested it for energy and it really helps. It doesn't taste is terrible as the iron I've taken in the past and it is a pretty small pill.

I'm considering splurging on my favorite chocolate bar and bringing it to the hospital with me.  It'll be my own version of a "push present." What could be more motivating to keep going in labor: a baby AND chocolate at the end!!

  • Sorry you got spoken to about your weight. I also got spoken to last week about my weight-unfortunately mine went in the other direction +5 lbs in 2 weeks. They did a quick protein check (I'd also been having headaches and swelling) but it came back negative. I'm blaming mine on the ben & jerrys.

That sucks. I know it sounds gross, but we are having beef stroganoff over spaghetti squash tonight and it's pretty dang good. Of course you could always go the quinoa or brown rice route if you don't have 332 lbs of spaghetti you need to use from your garden. It's a nice meal to pork up on.
