Baby proofing the fireplace

We discovered this weekend that LO can no clib the fire place ledge, reach into the mesh curtain and eat the fireplace rocks.

Any tips on preventing this?  (either prevent him from climbing up there or blocking the mesh curtain area)

Re: Baby proofing the fireplace

  • We have a baby gate secured in front of the mesh curtain.  It's been there for months and works great :)

ETA: He tugs and pulls on it and uses it as leverage to stand sometimes and it doesn't move.

  • I have been wondering this myself. My kiddo also crawls up the hearth (which comes up to her bellybutton), and then pulls the glass doors open - I never have let her get past that, but it's already dangerous and needs a more permanent baby proofing solution.

I second that - which gate, and are there any other options??

  • My brother has one of these for their house.  It works because (a) it keeps my nephew from getting near the bricks (climbing, hitting his head, etc) and (b) in the winter when they use the fireplace, which they do all the time, it keeps my nephew far enough away that any sparks that may come out of the fireplace don't make it that far, so he most likely won't get burned.

My FIL has his done a little more "ghetto rigged" (for lack of a better word).  He took a piece of plywood the size of the glass and wrapped it in a blanket and then bungy corded it around the glass.  It does the job and she hasn't messed with it yet.  Not sure that is the look you are going for though, but I guess it could be done a little nicer with fabric matching your living room.

I followed you up to the bungy cord.  Can you take a pic?  What exactly are the hooks of the bungy cord hooked too??

She is not there until Friday again, maybe I can get DH to get him to email me pics.  He has it hooked on the sides of plywood just from one end to the other I believe with the glass also.  At least this is what it looks like, TBH I have never asked or taken it apart or anything I jutst noticed he put it up after she got hurt on a kettle he used to keep by the fireplace.

This is a picture of our fireplace.  Don't mind the toys ;)

It's just a cheap pressure mounted gate (the specific one we're using is a hand-me-down and pretty old, but they still have the same type of gates for sale).

I'm pretty sure it's something like this:
