Hospital Bag

Hey mamas!

My friend is due in a couple of weeks and has asked me for some tips on the must haves for the hospital bags.

Now those are different from person to person, but I'm wondering if you had some good tips that I may be forgetting. We are pros in this now so we should be able to give her some good advice ;)

I got:

lipbalm, mints, soft toilet paper and kleenex, pillow, your own gown/jammies, music (although I didn't listen to any of it at the end).. what else?

TIA

Re: Hospital Bag

  • We had a deck of cards (had epidural, obviously) to pass the time.  I never got to use them since LO came so fast, but that was unusual.

  • Nursing pillow if she's nursing, slippers (that she won't mind getting messed up if she leaks on them), snacks, camera, take home outfit (bring a newborn size and a 0-3 month size just in case of a little/big baby), pillows from home.

Those are the big things that helped me most when I was there.  The ipod was also a big source of entertainment, especially when DS would be sleeping when I didn't have visitors.

Good call! I wish I had taken mine with, would have been so much easier.

    thanks!

  • Bring Tylenol, the hospital won't/can't give her DH anything since he's not a patient.  Also, change for the vending machine & chargers for any electronics (phone, laptop, etc).

  • An extra pillow case...so that mom doesn't have to sleep on a sweaty pillow after the baby is born!
  • Her DH/SO/Support Person should have their own bag with snacks, toiletries, pjs and a few changes of clothes.  We didn't expect to be in the hospital for 4 days after a c-section so DH only had one fresh outfit with him.  Luckily, family swung out to our place to get him some.

I would also second the nursing pillow.  Wished I'd had mine.

Nursing sleep bra.  My tatas were thankful for the support.

Lansinoh gel pads.  On day 3 when the lactation consultant finally offered me some I was so damaged already.  Could have used those from the start.

Something for LO to wear home.

Something very roomy/loose around the waist for mom to wear home.

Nasal drops/spray.  The anesthesia/oxygen mask left my nose a bloody mess.

I honestly did not break open my hospital bag except when we were leaving to grab a change of clothes for the way home.  I totally mis-packed mine.

I think the things I had DH run home for was a book to read while being induced, some gummies, and something to drink. I should have requested shampoo and soap from home too.

I'd also recommend one NB and one 0-3m outfit. I only packed a 0-3m and our 7lb 11oz baby was swimming in it.

And practice practice practice how to get your kid in the carseat. I felt so retarded having to ask the hospital staff to help.

Oh, and an extra bag for all the crap you take home.

  • donut pillow! awesome for sitting, plus to use in the shower at the hospital.  Those wooden benches are not post-partum friendly!

I wish!  Looking back, I bet if I had asked they could've given me one...they just didn't offer it.  And I didn't know how awesome it was either!  I will definitely ask when I have the next one.

  • I also brought my breast pump.  The LC was able to show me how to use it and I was able to use it 10 minutes a day which helped my milk come in.
