I just have the standard vics thermometer, and i thought i have heard that u are supposed to add two degrees when it is taken under the arm? can anybody help me?!?!
A rectal temp on a little one is the MOST acurate. if you do take the temp under the arm then you ARE supposed to add 2 degrees to match a rectal temp, and add 1 degree for the oral temp.
But if the child cannot hold the thermometer under the tongue, then you should do the rectal.
I believe you can use the one you have. You only need to insert the TIP of the thermometer. If you insert too far (say half way up the neck of the item) you run a risk of puncturing her bowel.
You can apply just a tiny amount of petroleum jelly to the end-to help it slide in-and let the machine do it's magic. If you have an ear thermometer, I'm not sure if that would work rectally.
Your welcome It might not bother her as much as you think. Since she gets her diaper changed, and her bottom wiped, she might just think it's 'kinda' the same thing. My little girl never minded it.
My dr recommends under arm and that's also what was used at the hospital. Baby 411 says the same-and claims rectal is outdated. Always different schools of thoughts when it comes to our Los I'm finding!
My ped says rectal is the way to go, but she did tell me that a "normal" rectal temp is higher than 98.6. I think she said normal rectal is 99.1 or something in the low 99 range.
