How do you give LO hummus?

DD LOVES it.  I usually spread it on bread then cut the bread into squares, but it gets messy, any other ideas?  I'd love to give it to her in different forms.

Re: How do you give LO hummus?

  • If I want LO to eat something, I basically have to put hummus on it.  She LOVES hummus.  She stopped eating plain chicken about a month ago and I was getting concerned on how to get her to eat protein.  Now I shred the chicken and basically make a chicken salad by adding hummus.  She gobbles it up.  I just put little clumps of it on her highchair tray and she does well with it.

  • DS loves hummus too! I spread it on tortillas, ritz crackers, dip goldfish in it, and I've also just put a dollop on his tray and let him dip veggie fries in it. He always ends up messy after eating hummus.

  • dd2 eats it on bread.  dd1 loved hummus so much that she used to just eat it by the spoonful!

  • I usually just spread a little on a tortilla or bread, but I've also mixed it into my avocado and tuna salad.  I like the shredded chicken idea a pp posted- I'll have to try that.

I give it to we with carrot or celery slices.  She dips them and either licks off the hummus or she bites off pieces.

  • DD dips raw carrot sticks in it. It does get MESSY but she loves dipping them!

  • I give it to DD on whole wheat tortilla.  Definitely messy, but if we are out I try to put pieces straight in her mouth so it's not as messy.

  • DD wasn't the biggest fan of hummus but when we've given it to her, it was on cucumber slices.

  • We put it on wheat thins or pita chips.  She loves it.

  • Thanks all, I'm going to try the chicken thing that sounds awesome.  I was hoping there was some way for it not be a huge mess.   Normally I don't care at all but she tends to put her hands all through her hair while she eats and her hair ends up with a ton of hummus in it... Guess there's not really a less messy way.

I have been thinking I need to invent a cap for kids to wear when eating, maybe with matching bibs.  I am so tired of washing every meal out of DD's hair!

  • I buy the whole wheat sandwich thins and spread it on and give her a half sandwich. It is thin and stays closed pretty well so isn't too messy. She loves it! I also mix it with peas and carrots in a bowl and spoon feed it to her. She is pretty obsessed with hummus!

  • This might be a little weird but I put it on chicken for her.  But the messiness factor with hummus is kind of inevitable!

Sometimes I toast two pieces of bread and make a sandwich (I use hummus, PB, or cream cheese for this), and give her that to eat.  Much less messy.  Maybe try that?

  • I wish LO liked hummus!  He wants nothing to do with it!
