Flying with a newborn? / Eekk update

As an update to the post below, my friend took another test and it's definitely positive. I'm really excited for her since she's wanted to be a mom since she was in law school. :D

Anyway, this is super early to be thinking of, but I'd like to fly down and see her before she delivers (and maybe do a baby shower). Could I fly towards the end of Feb with a 2 month old, or would that be ?ber-crazy? It's a pretty short flight - 1.5 hrs air time.

Re: Flying with a newborn? / Eekk update

  • They are so much easier to fly with when little. And it's not such a long flight. I think you should go for it, if you are feeling up to it

  • I flew with DD when she was 6 weeks old by myself, fully loaded with all the trimmings.  Nurse on takeoff until cruising altitude, and nurse on landing (as soon as descent starts) because that way they won't cry with the pressure changes in their ears because they're constantly swallowing.  (Or a pacifier too.)

I look back to those wonderful days when she was that small, and realize how easy it was (not knowing it at the time).  So if you have the chance, do it and enjoy it - most often, babies will conk out due to the 'white noise' of the sound of the aircraft.

  • If you breast feed then baby will get lots of antibodies from you :)
  • Flying with a 2 month old is probably easier than an older baby.  The baby will lay in your arms and most likely sleep.  You can nurse (or bottle feed) at take off to help.  The flight isn't so long so it should be ok.

I've flown many times with my daughter and I have to say, the younger she was, the easier.  Now she's a maniac and I'm scared!

  • I'm thinking of flying around that time, but I am a bit nervous about flying during flu season. I definitely think it will be easier with a young baby than an older one, I'm just nervous about the recycled air during a time of year when a lot of people are sick.

  • Of course you can fly with a newborn.  Go for it!
  • You mention throwing her a shower, I would definitely have someone near her be your back up.  You never know what is going to be going on at 2 mos PP.  And while you and baby may be perfectly fine to fly and get down there.  Throwing a shower on top of everything else might be a bit too much for you.

I had an emergency c/s with DS and I was just starting to really feel back to my old self around 6-8 weeks (2 months).  But I know that some women bounce back very quickly.  You just never know what you are going to get.

That's a good point.  I know that she has a lot of good friends in the DC area, so I'm sure that some of them will help in case I can't get down there. :)  Thanks for the idea.

  • Yeah I would say it would be much easier when they're smaller.  Everything is much more compact, no snacks to bring, no activities to entertain :)  I wouldn't worry about the air on the plane.  To me that's pretty much an old wives tail anyway.
