Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Baby Signing --- er, um Mommy Signing

If you are signing to your babe, when did you start and when did your baby start?

I started signing to my DD at 4 mos.  She is almost 12 mos and hasn't signed.  I sign regularly: milk, food, drink, all done, more, I love you, cat, dog; and sometimes: sleep, play, please, thank you, bird, pig ... etc.  DH regularly signs milk and all done.

DD waves some and clapped once or twice.

  • Started signing about 5 months and LO started signing back around 9.5 months.  It's important to understand though that their signs don't always look like ours.  C started clapping when he wanted "more" and slamming the tray on his high chair then opening his arms wide when he was "all done".  Their signs typically are variations of the signs we use so you really have to keep your eyes open...all my kids signed but all their signs were slightly different than the ones I was using.  Good luck!

Yep, totally agree with this.  Their signs might not be correct but if the motion is similar they are usually signing.  DD's more has evolved some from one hand pointing into the other hand to more of a clapping motion.  And her milk sign looks like she flicking her fingers wildy.

Keep encouraging your LO!  Once they get it it will be exciting!

  • My little guy just mastered the sign for milk.  Of course he uses it anytime he wants me, and the cutest thing he does is pops off while nursing, signs milk about three times and then starts nursing again.

Its like he's telling me, milk, mommy, milk!

We started signing at around 5 months and this is his first and only sign at 10 months.  Hope he will get more and all done soon!

  • My LO can do 'more' but that's the only one I've really kept up on, becuase she seemed to be getting frustrated not being able to remember everything. Even though she can make the sign, she uses it all the time, 'more' sleep, 'more' food, 'more' walking, etcc...even when she is CLEARLY done with something, she still signs more.

Give it time! Maybe try choosing a few signs and really buckling down to a few and go from there, we are going to continue to work on 'more' but will soon be trying 'thank you' soon. I chose 'thank you' so that when she gets something she asks for, she gets it, in theory I hope it starts teaching her manners....we have NONE right now! I would honestly try things that are alike in meaning vs. gesture.

Hope that helps a little and good luck! Just remember that all babies are different, some are similar to others, but none are the same!!

  • Hopefully I'm not re-posting...I had my whole response and then lost it somehow!  Blah!  I am a Sign Language interpreter and I thought I would sign all the time to my baby and she would be signing like crazy by now!  NOT the case!  I started signing to her when she would drop things and look for them because developmentally this is a signal that they are ready to learn baby sign language.  I try to regularly sign milk, more, all done, please, thank you, I love you, play, drink.  She vary rarely will sign milk and more but usually she tries to say them which just cracks me up!  I will usually once or twice a day sign to her with my voice on and then also some with it off just whatever I'm saying and she watches me some but doesn't really seem interested!  So don't be frustrated!  Your DD will start signing more when she realizes how much it helps her get things she wants!
