So I love my Timi + Leslie Rachel diaper bag. It's awesome and functional and I will use it even when LO is older and no longer needs a diaper bag. However I realize that it's not really appropriate for everything (ex. trips to the beach, leaving it in the car, quick grab and go stuff). Everyone keeps telling me it's awesome to have a cheaper leave it in the car, let it get beat up, squish it in with the rest of your stuff, travel diaper bag. Okay, so maybe most of the girls I know have about FOUR diaper bags each but I can't justify that.
My Timi + Leslie bag is perfect when I don't want my diaper bag to look like a diaper bag but when I want my diaper back TO look like a diaper bag and have a smaller chance of it being stolen and have it be more casual, I have nothing like that.
I want something with good canvas/something like that straps (the braided ones on my bag can be exhausting after a while). Any recommendations?
Re: Rec Your Inexpensive ($50 or less) Diaper Bag!
I obviously haven't used it yet, but we got it because I have a few friends that swear by it: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2401256
I already put everything in it; it all fit in there with some extra space and I love that it's just black and simple. If I was having a girl though, you bet I'd have a pink diaper bag with flowers and the whole sha-bang, lol. Boy choices are so limited.
SCANDAL!
I have a Harper Tote from Pottery Barn Kids for the exact reasons you mentioned (trips to the beach, park, running quick errands) and it's held up very well over the last year that I've had it. I haven't needed to, but it can even be thrown into the wash if necessary.
They've got it in a few colors and are contantly changing the patterns they offer, but here's an example: (sorry not clicky - on a mac)

A backpack? I never thought about an inexpensive diaper bag for beach runs... hmmmm.... since we don't really have a summer left I might just use a backpack since I can bring my diaper bag anywhere in the winter... it's not like I'll be outside much in -22F.
DH and I both have expensive-ish bags (yeah he needed his own). He has a diaper dude and I have a jujube and I don't think I want to carry that around in the sand....

Thank you ladies! I'm going to do some shopping around now.
Of course I started looking online and saw Skip Hop bags and now I want one... lol. Oops. $15 more is not THAT bad though...
I had a Skip Hop bag for DD and LOVED it! It was https://www.amazon.com/Skip-Hop-Duo-Deluxe-Black/dp/B000YDZEEA/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1343571295&sr=1-1. It had enough room for everything, but wasn't too big, plus DH didn't mind carrying it around. It held up really well too. As I have been looking and getting out all our baby stuff, I can't find it
It looks like they have a bunch of really cute bags on Amazon and I think I saw something that said 30% off..... hmmm. I might have to start looking now.
Pew have a skip hop bento bag, not that we've used it yet, but I can see that it's going to be very useful, especially for DH, and especially for toddlerhood, but that one was about $100, not the most expensive, but I probably won't be leaving it out in my car. I get what you are saying though, fortunately, my girlfriend made me a super cute diaper bag that will work perfectly
I like the Duo Deluxe but I'm thinking about the Dash. The Duo Deluxe is almost the same shape as my Timi + Leslie bag. When I got my friend her diaper bag for her shower I realized how easy to load and find things in a shallower long bag is. So I'm not sure. Oi! The Cherry Blossom one in the Dash is super cute...
I actually received 4 (yes, 4!) diaper bags, so I'll be using them for different purposes. My every day bag will be my Vera Bradley (in Totally Turq... my mom got it for me for user $50 at the Vera Bradley factory sale... it's more than $50 on their site now, but they run sales all the time). The link is here: https://www.verabradley.com/product/Category/Mom-and-Baby/Baby-Bag/154882/defaultColor/Priscilla+Pink/c/638/sc/643/p/154882.uts?fromSearch=1
I also have two 31 bags that I received from a friend. I'll be keeping one at LO's in home childcare and 1 in the car for "emergencies" (extra diapers, batteries, change of clothes, toys, first aid kit, etc.).
The 4th bag is one that was handmade by a parent of one of my students. It is *beautiful* and is impeccably made, but I'm not exactly sure how I'll use it yet. I had to use the other 3 first because they were gifts from my mom and my bff. ;o)
LOVE my JJ Cole diaper tote bag. I paid $37 for mine on sale (looks to be about $60 right now - the Lemon Posy print), but they have patterns that are around $50.

We have this Phil & Ted's backpack-style one:

Not girly so DH feels comfortable with it too. My sister has a backpack diaper bag and is the only one they've ever used through all three kids. I love that if your hands are full (not if -- when!) you can secure it on your back and get it out of the way. It comes with a changing pad, bottle cooler, and lots of compartments.
We have this bag, too. We like it because it's simple, and my husband was okay with carrying it around, too.
