1st Trimester

Vent and advice ( a little long)

Friday was my first ultrasound; my RE wasn?t there so I saw someone else. After my appt. I was instructed to make an appt. with the OB associates that affiliated in with my RE. (their in the same building)  So I go down to the OB?s office to make an appt. I was giving a card and was told to call a make an appt.  No problem. When I got home I called to set up an appt.

This is where it gets crazy!

I was told they couldn?t see me until my RE released me. So I called my RE?s nurse and she said that I?m released and to call OB back to make and appt.  I will be under RE?s care until I?m 8 weeks, but it?s hard to get and appt. with OB so making an appt. in advance is better.

So, I called back? I was told that I wouldn?t be seen until I was 10 weeks so they could hear the heartbeat. So I reply, you can hear the heartbeat around 6 weeks so at my 8 week appt. I should be ok right? She replied, miss we rather see you at 10 weeks we don?t want you to come in the office and not hear your baby?s heartbeat. We wouldn?t want to upset you! So, I ask can I make an appt. for 5weeks from now they lady replies no miss not until your 10 weeks... (I?m 5 weeks now 5 weeks from now is 10 weeks RIGHT?? ) and so I state to the lady I don?t mind making the appt. now; she says miss I can?t take your appt. now?.. and hangs up!

I think I should find a new OB office, would you find a new office or try to wait it out???

  • That might just be when their office schedules first appointments. I'm not being seen until 9 weeks. I've seen a few people on the boards who aren't seen until 12 weeks.

  • Thats very irritating! I would call back tomorrow and maybe someone else will answer the phone. If the same person answers ask for the office manager and maybe she will be more of a help to you.

  • It stinks, but that might be how it's done at that practice.

The problem isn't when they will see her.  The problem is that they won't let her even schedule herself in for a 10 week appointment until she IS 10 weeks.

Call back tomorrow, and hopefully you will get someone else on the phone.  She was either having a stupid moment and was confused, was having a bad day, or the office has some crazy rules.

If after you speak with the office tomorrow you get the same run-around, I would ask your RE to give you the name of another local OB practice.

    Good luck, and congrats!

  • It would be rare for then to hear the HB on a Doppler at 8 weeks, and many practices will not turn on the simulated sound of the ultrasound machine. I'd call back Monday and make an appointment for whatever is your 10-12w mark.

  • I'm not sure why everyone is advising OP to call again.  I don't care what the office "policy" is.  OP called a doctor's office and was hung up on.  This is where any thought of using this practice should end.  Do you really want to deal with such inappropriate, unprofessional behavior for the next 8 months?  Go elsewhere.

Totally agree!  Any office should be helpful and respectful.  Your RE just referred you to this office because they have a relationship with them; it does not mean that you HAVE to go there.  You are the patient and are entitled to choosing whichever OB you want.

  • If it is that aggravating just to make 1 appt, I can't imagine how bad dealing with them for 30 more weeks would be....

Because I don't automatically count a great recommended doctor out based on one snotty receptionist.

It's fine to differ, you asked why anyone was recommending she call again - so I answered why I did.

    This.

    1) OP was trying to do what they wanted her to.  They hung up on her.

    2) Everybody should be selective about the OB/MW that they choose.  Go interview at least 2 other OBs, and then pick, but def. pick someone else.

  • I, personally, would be finding a new OB. That is ridiculousness. I took my pregnancy test and it was positive and was in the very next business day to see my doctor. I was 4 weeks and a few days. I then was in at 5 weeks 6 weeks and 7 weeks then again at 9 weeks. I am a partial high risk, because of my past miscarriage history, but around where I live, if you want to make an appointment and pay for it, they will get you in. I would be so furious if I was you, and would definitively find someone else to go to.

Good luck on your pregnancy and I am praying everything goes well with your doctors! :)

  • I'm certain that they are listening for the heartbeat on a fetal doppler in which case you do need to be around 10 weeks.  They may not have made your appointment because being affiliated with your RE they know that you are under the RE's care until 8 weeks so if you are only 5 weeks they know that you are still under their care.

I would wait it out.  Honestly, around here it's rare to be seen before 10 weeks.  And if you are a new patient, not being referred by a gyno or an RE that works with the practice it can take a while to get in anyways.  In my practice new patient appoinments are booked 8-10 weeks after calling while existing patients are seen almost right away.  So you may try switching practices only to find out that since they don't work with your RE they aren't going to see you until 12-15 weeks anyways.

This isn't how I read it at all.  I read it as in they won't make it now- because she is 5 weeks and still under the care of her RE and they won't schedule it until she is out of the care of her RE (which would be 8 weeks according to OP)

Agreed. I love my doctor, NP, and nurse in the practice I go to but a couple of the receptionists can be quite dense ...

OP, I would wait until I was 8 weeks and then call to make an appointment. The way I am reading your post is that if you have an problems you would call your RE until 8 weeks, correct? In which case I wouldn't be concerned about scheduling until I was officially released from them.

  • I would find a new OB's office.  There is no reason to be rude and get hung up on.  I would call back and ask to speak with the office manager and tell them about how the lady was RUDE.

As far as the other part, I am kinda shocked the RE relased you so early.  Mine dont let you go until your around 8w4d.  This way they have 2 u/s to watch the baby grow

  • While the scheduling thing is weird the heartbeat thing is not.

They are talking about hearing it with a doppler, right now you can only hear it through an ultrasound.  Honestly, even 10 weeks is a little early sometimes to hear it with the doppler.

This, definitely. In my experience, when it comes to doctors and doctor's offices, run at the first sign of danger (esp. this early in your pregnancy...it will be relatively easy to go anywhere else you feel like). You'll be much happier in the long run.
