C-section?

I am getting a c-section monday morning and i will have an epidural and spinal block so I won't feel any pain for 20 hrs or so. Has anyone had one of these and what all will I be able to do for our baby. I plan in breast feeding and realize I won't be able to get up for around 20 hrs. Any advise would be great I am getting nervous.

Re: C-section?

  • While the hospital may not let you get out of bed for 20 hours, you will be able to move.  I was able to (barely) wiggle my toes while I was leaving the OR last time.  So once you're finished in recovery and in bed you'll gain feeling in your legs and be able to roll over and scootch around a bit.

As for nursing, it's no problem.  They'll bring the baby to you and help you position them.  You just won't be able to get up and change diapers.  But that's what nurses and Daddies are for!

  • You will be able to nurse, and hold your baby.  I had a c-section just over 2 weeks ago, I am wondering why you are having an epidural and a spinal block, seems like over kill.  I just had the epidural, then they put a 24 hour pain killer in my iv so I didn't have pain, but I was up walking at 10pm, my C-Section was at noon.  They took my catheter out the next morning.

    Good Luck.

  • Apparently I am getting an epidural/spinal combo. The spinal will last 1 to 2 hrs and they leave the epidural in for 20 hrs for pain management so I won't be in pain. So I will have catheter in the whole time. I am concerned bc I won't be able to change diapers or get up for such along time. Our hospital does the combo so mom doesn't experience any pain. Just not sure how I feel about being numb that long.

This exactly!  Your only concerns should be feeding yourself and your baby :)

And be very careful when the let you out of the bed -- specifically swinging your legs over to the side.  Take it slow, but get up and move around as much as you can.  It will help in the long run!  Three weeks out I am back to my normal self again, and was at 90% last week.

  • I had csection 3 weeks ago. I had a spinal block then morphine for pain after. My csection was at 12pm. I wasnt in any pain for the whole first day. Gradually throughout the day I was able to move toes, feet, legs, etc. I was up out of bed around 8pm that same day to sit in a chair for a while.

I was able to hold baby and nurse right away in bed. My first nursing session was around 1pm, only one hour after his birth. The second day I had a little pain and started taking pain meds by mouth. They took my cathiter and IV out the morning after the csection.

After I was home I took the pain meds for a few days then switched to just motrin for a few more days. Its been 3 weeks, I feel great! I have pain occasionally but nothing major. The majority of my pain was the first few days home with baby (I have other kids, stairs, etc. so I probably over did it)

Good Luck to you! Its such a special time! Charish every moment :)

You'll be able to breastfeed. Don't worry, everyone will make sure you have what you need. My advice would be that when they say you can start to try to get up and move a little, do it! (What I did to motivate myself was drink a TON of water right after they took out the catheter. That way I knew I needed to get up and do it quick.) Take whatever pain meds you need to before you start really hurting and you'll do great! The more you move the better you'll feel.
