XP from bf: Mirena vs. mini pill

I need to figure out birth control now that my libido is back. We're really not a fan of condoms, will do them if we decide they're best but they're the least effective of our choices, too. We're contemplating using Mirena vs. getting the mini pill. I was on the combination pill before baby girl and LOVED it, I had nothing but good side effects.

Now I'm contemplating a hormonal form of birth control (obviously progesterone only), but it makes me nervous. I don't want to do anything bad for LO, and I just don't know. I want to talk with my doctor, but I can't get in to see her for a month :-/

Additionally, my biggest hold up with mirena is the really high risk to the baby if I *were* to get pregnant. I realize it's unlikely, but it's so dangerous if I do! My biggest hold up with the mini pill is having to take it at the same time every day. I'm not sure when I would take it and where I would keep it that I could do that easily.

What are your thoughts?

Re: XP from bf: Mirena vs. mini pill

  • I am using the mini pill and it was suggested by my midwife because I am BFing so it's totally safe.  It took me about a week to get into the groove of taking it at the same time.  I settled into taking it every night before bed since I always go to bed between 9 and 10pm.

i started with the mini pill, but i am switching to mirena. i thought that with working full time i could take it every day before i leave for work, since it is the only thing that is consistent. nope. if lo has a bad morning, im running around then nearly forget in the rush. so keep in mind that your schedule might not be consistent as you might think.

I'm on the regular pill and just set my phone to ring to remember take it.  However, I never had a problem taking the pill before. And it's  really more for treating my PCOS than contraceptive use, so if I miss it by an hour or two it's not that big a deal (DH has MFI and I have PCOS).

  • When I used to take the pill before baby, I set a reminder on my cell phone as well. Worked like a charm.

  • I opted for Mirena because I knew there was no way I would remember to take a pill at the same exact time every day. I am horrible about pill-taking.

  • I'm getting the Paraguard put in next month.  It's a non-hormonal IUD.  I really wanted to avoid artificial hormones while bf-ing.
