Sleeping positions

I haven't slept well for about a week now bc I can't get comfortable. I love sleeping on my back but that's not really an option anymore so I'm lost! I have a regular body pillow that helps but I'm still sleeping restlessly. Wanna share your favorite positions that send you to dreamland and help you wake up feeling refreshed instead of achy and numb and still tired?!

Re: Sleeping positions

  • This is a good question!  I too am a back sleeper so I'm looking forward to some suggestions.

  • I cannot wait to get these answers to! I miss back sleeping. I flip flop from side to side at least 25 times a night inbetween the potty breaks.

  • The only thing I've found that helps (I'm a back sleeper too) is to surround myself with pillows, propping my head and upper back up, and stacking pillows under my knees! Essentially looking like I'm sitting in this intense recliner lol

  • I have a comfort U body pillow I bought off of amazon that I like.  It's shaped like a U so to can put one arm between your arms and legs in the front of you and have the other arm of the pillow right at your back.  I don't sleep perfectly, but it has helped a lot from how I was sleeping before.  And a side note, I took an all day childbirth prep class yesterday, and the instructor had us lie down on a yoga mat with our pillow while we listened to a relaxation cd and she taught our support people massage techniques in another room for about 15 minutes...I fell asleep in about 3 minutes just lying on my side!  I don't know if I was just really tired, but it was the best nap ever :)  Maybe the firmness of the floor/mat was a good change for my body and I might try it when I nap today...
  • If you can get comfy on your back, it's fine to sleep that way.  You will wake up or roll over long before any damage can be done.  I sleep mostly on my left side, snuggled up with my snoogle, but wake up partially on my tummy most mornings (I'm a tummy sleeper when not pg).

  • Good question!  I'm a stomach sleeper and cannot sleep more than a couple hours without waking up to change positions.  The same thing happened last pregnancy so I don't know that there is a solution.

  • I can't wait to sleep good again, even if it's just for a few hours at a time.

Last night was the worst sleep of all this pg because of back pain. However, this morning at about 5 I did finally get comfortable and slept until 9.

I don't have a body pillow, but I think I may go get one today. I stacked two pillows for my head/shoulders and I sleep with a teddy bear (yeah, I'm 33 and sleep with a bear...SO?)Big Smile  anyway, I was on my left side, teddy bear was more or less under my boobs and part of my stomach. I think that little support under those spots helped.

Pretty much it's hit or miss I think. I think I might try sleeping in a bra too, just to see if that offers some additional support.

  • I flip from L to R side throughout the night, usually as much on my tummy as comfortable.  I use my C-shape pg pillow, mostly to prop my legs as it's too thick to put under the belly.

I usually shove a thin pillow or blanket under the belly to prop it up a bit.  I also incline my upper body a bit (multiple pillows etc) as that seems to keep the heartburn away.

If I want to sleep on my back, I prop myself up a whole bunch; put a pillow under one hip (to keep the uterus tilted and off the vena-whatever) and a pillow under my knees. Complicated, but comfy to me.

The biggest thing to me is keeping the radiates-heat-like-crazy DH as far away as possible otherwise I can never get to sleep.

  • Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone and for the ideas. Sleeping onmy bck is just nowhere near comfortable anymore between heartburn gagging me and my belly making me feel like in trapped under a concrete beam! I've been trying a lot of the positions you've all mentioned but I'm thinking i might need to try the pillow or wedge if some sort under my belly---I just feel like my belly is so heavy and makes sleeping so uncomfortable.

  • This has been a huge problem for me and my husband as well.  I sleep with a body pillow and still toss and turn all night and I was originally a side sleeper so that isn't the issue.  I talked to my doctor and she told me to start taking Benedril or Unisom at night to help.  Since starting that, I sleep so much better!

  • The best way to sleep is with a pillow between your legs. Works everytime!
