EBF for 2 weeks- introduce bottle?

I was thinking I might try my pump today and have DH introduce one bottle daily ( she will eventually need to take a bottle when I return to work in October). I have so many opinions on when to try the bottle-- any advice??

TIA :)

  • Ditto to everything here- kid is 2 weeks, we've been doing a bottle every other day or so to get him ready to take it when I go back to work in October.

  • DD had a big weight drop and I had to nurse then pump and feed her whatever I pumped.  So she had a bottle by 5 days old and I don't remember it causing a problem for us.  I nursed her a full year.

  • If it seems to be going well and she's got a solid understanding of latching, yes try it out. I was a stickler about not introducing a pacifier or bottle until 4 weeks and by then it was too late for a pacifier and took a LOT of work to get her to understand the bottle.

  • You're going to continue to see conflicting opinion so I say do it. I would just make sure that I pump when he's feeding her to make sure your supply doesn't take a hit. We've been using bottles and BF since out son was almost a week old.

  • check kellymom but I believe its not recommended until b/n 4-6 weeks

  • I started to pump and occasionally give her the bottle around 2 weeks because I was exhausted and needed DH to help sometimes. I had the baby blues pretty bad in the beginning, so I REALLY needed to have that break once in the evening. A lot of people warned me about starting that early because DD could have nipple confusion or my milk wouldn't come in right, but to be honest neither happened - DD has no problem taking the bottle or the breast whenever, and my supply is just fine now at 8 weeks.

ETA - I don't know if it's because we waited too long, or maybe it really is just DD's preference, but we didn't introduce a pacifier until about 3-4 weeks and she refuses it 9 times/10 now.

  • My son also wasn't gaining weight well in the first two weeks of life, so I had to nurse, pump, and then offer a bottle of expressed milk. He had a hard time learning to latch effectively, and I was concerned about nipple confusion but not willing to starve the boy - but now at six weeks he nurses well and seems to prefer it to the bottle, though he will take one as well as pacifiers.

FWIW, my pediatrician's office recommends introducing a daily bottle at two weeks if all is going well otherwise with breastfeeding.

See, and we waited until 7 weeks and she took a bottle just fine. Every baby is different.
