Baby furniture

Just curious where other moms found or are looking for baby furniture?  I would love a convertible crib and two dressers in espresso but two dressers is making the set seem expensive to DH.  My thought is if it's a bedroom set its not bad.  Two sets from JCPi liked discontinued the conversion rails so now I'm onto a baby cache set at BRU.  Current promotion is two dressers and a crib for about 1400 incl tax. Is this average? High?  Thanks for your help!

Re: Baby furniture

  • That is way expensive. The stuff we got DD was crib w/ conversion rail, mattress, and dresser with changing top was around 500$. To get the second dresser would of been another 200-250$. However, babies don't need 2 dressers. DD has one dresser and she only uses 1-2 drawers. The 3rd drawer is linens.

  • We have used mostly IKEA. We got our crib there and this storage/organization set  https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S49857543/ . And will most likely get the Hemnes dresser from IKEA as well since it is around 300.00 and very sturdy. We have one in our bedroom already and really like it.

I love the storage unit because we got to pick our own bin colors and I have already labeled them with all the baby stuff. Diapers. Wipes. Creams. ect and it can be used for toys later on. It comes in 4 separate sections so if they outgrow some of it I can move it to my craft room for my own storage.

We are spending more than that, quite a bit more than that actually. My hubby wanted real wood, not coated particle board...since he works with wood, building houses, custom cabinets and things, he is really picky. For us the thing was for it to last as long as possible, meaning from crib-high school. Since the crib we want converts into a toddler bed, a day bed and then a double bed and it's really great quality it can. That makes it worth it for us...

  • We borrowed a crib and got real furniture for both of our kids.  The oldest went from crib to twin bed.  The second will hopefully be in a twin by that time, but if not we'll just get a crib that doesn't convert.

  • Thanks everyone!  The JCP savanna tori is the one that discontinued the rails in espresso :(
  • Oh really??? I hadnt caught that! Dang! Im really annoyed by this. Why would they discontinue them but continue selling the convertible crib?

  • I know! I literally registered for it last Friday so we could use completion discount to purchase and very next day it was unavailable.
  • We've been looking for about a month now at all the retail chain stores (BRU, Target, Burlington, etc.) and one really huge baby warehouse place near our house.  Today we went to Buy Buy Baby and finally decided on a set.  Crib, conversion rails, double dresser, hutch, set-up, and delivery were $1400.  This still seems like an awful lot to spend, but what can you do.  There is also a 5 drawer dresser, but I figure with the double dresser and a closet a baby and/or toddler is not going to have that many clothes.

  • Craigslist. I did go out and buy new mattresses.
  • That does sound pretty high, but I don't really have much (any) experience.  We're doing conversion crib and changing table/dresser, which are about $700 combined.  The room has a closet, so if there ends up being overflow from the dresser, we can just hang stuff up, too.  We have a cradle, but I think we're going to get a co-sleeper for our room.  Other than that, maybe a little bookcase?  Have you checked Amazon for the set you're looking at?  Sometimes you can get things cheaper on there.

We got Baby Cache set from BRU in espresso. We got it when crib was 50% off if you purchased two dressers (lobg dresser plus a chest). We got the crib for 250. Each dresser was 549. Thats 1350 but we opened a BRU card and saved an additional 10% bringing us down to 1250. We looked at many places and quite honestly this was one of the least expensive but still sturdy and well made. We say a few sets atBurlington (Baby Depot) but most were discontinued floor models. We didn't care for the Ikea cribs although those would have been cheaper options. Our set was delivered on Thursday and it really is gorgeous. Good luck with your shopping!

  • I didn't think about opening a babies r us charge!  Thank you!
  • Here's the response I got from JCP. Eff! I'm not sure I'd trust the cherry color to match between brands:

Thank you for your interest in the Savannah conversion rails.

The espresso and the cherry are no longer available in Savannah bed
rails. It appears we will no longer carry them. However we do have
another set of conversion rails that are compatible with the Tori
    conversion crib.

The conversion rails suggested does not come in espresso. They do come
in cherry and the item number is RN343-4460 along with several other
colors. If you type in  "crib conversion rails"  in the search box you
can take a look at them.

Looks like I'm back to the drawing board of trying to decide on furniture, too.

  • Personally I think that's super expensive.

We bought our two cribs two weeks ago and the changing table. Our cribs were marked down because of season end and are convertible to toddler and day beds (we're just going to look into bunk beds when that time comes) but we spent $86 on each crib, and $71 on the changing table. We are just going to find a dresser to match and we won't be spending over $100 on that - so all in all for our twins furniture it will be $343.

GL! Target also has great lower cost options as well as Amazon.

  • Believe it or not, we actually got ours at Target (it is espresso-colored). Each piece was between $200-$300, which would add up to be significantly lower than the price you're showing.

  • We are going with the Graco Charleston Convertible crib with the matching dressing in cherry. It's extremely affordable and Consumer Reports rated the crib very highly. I'm going to buy it at Target.

I'm having triplets, so I'm buying the cribs from Ikea. I am going to get a dresser off of craigslist and chalk paint it. I hope that the dresser is about $200.

I think it depends on your style though. If I was more traditional, I'd probably want a full matching set.  I still wouldn't be worried about it lasting until college though. I know that I practically destroyed my furniture as a child. I remember coloring on it, putting stickers on it, spilling nail polish on it, etc. :)   Children can be rough on furniture. I  guess if it's all wood you can always refinish it.

You may also think about buying the dressers from an unfinished wood store. Then you could get the color you want, and have the solid wood.

We're in this boat.  I'm buying a crib and long, 8-drawer dresser from Baby's Dream.  It's a non-toxic, 100% real wood line I found at a local baby store.  The reason we're making the investment now is so we don't have to buy another dresser down the road.  My parents got quality furniture for me and my dresser/hutch and bed are being used here in my own home, 30 years later.

  • I see this an older post HOWEVER we had the same issue and just bought the rails! Must be a new shipment or enough complaints/the issue with JCPenney financial troubles. Try it out ladies! We just got 'em ! My husband was contacting the parts person then checked the site and magically they appeared!
  • We spent quite a bit more. I think the nursery is the most exciting part about waiting for baby :) why not make yourself happy! We got our crib in :) Blythe crib from PB
  • So Just a suggestion not sure if you'll find anything, but my town does a yardsale group on Facebook. I've been a member for about a year and one thing I've notice is alot of baby things, clothes, equipment and furniture. Might be something to check out if your area has one.
  • DH and I purchased our convertible crib from Wal-Mart for $250. The changing table came from Target for $80 - but it was really only the price of shipping because we had a GC leftover from our wedding that we had not completely used up yet. The dresser we decided we decided to buy a REAL "big boy" dresser, rather than a baby/kids dresser. We figured, since the convertible crib goes up to a full-size bed and would most likely serve him well until he is at least 13/14, we thought we would also buy him a dresser that he will be able to use for that long as well. We went to a local furniture store and bought it for $400. It matches the crib and changing table perfectly. Plus they delivered the dresser and we didn't have to try to put one together - which was a bonus! :) Good luck with shopping!

This baby's nursery was my craft room, where I already had a 3 drawer china hutch that has been in the family for years to store fabric.
I have nowhere else for it, so it's going to be baby storage. We will remove the glass and replace with something else, later. Probably this.
So, I found a crib in cherry and changing table from Craigslist in the same, and spent approximately $40 for both. The crib is a sleigh bed, convertible and was free, because it was a drop side. I ordered the kit to fix it, and all is well.
    I already had the mattress.

  • We purchased our convertible crib, mattress and dresser/changing table at Nebraska Furniture Mart--ended up paying just over $800 and got free delivery. We were more impressed with their quality than other stores and since we plan on using these items for at least 3 kids, we know we got our money's worth.
  • We got ours at Sears. We got a convertible crib, 6 drawer dresser, and changing table for less than the set we found at Target. Better quality too! We waited till their one day sale (which happens like every month) and saved 200.00. Husband is putting it together this weekend.
  • We bought a crib from bru for dd. We had a long dresser already.. Real wood, that was my dads as a kid. Now that #2 is on the way, dd is in a twin bed that we already had and we got a second long dresser from my parents that matches the one we had. So dd has a twin bed and a long dresser in her room. Nursery has the crib and a different long dresser. The top will double as a changing table.

  • We found a crib we liked but the set only had a tall dresser so I felt like I would have needed the changing table that went with it and I really don't want a changing table.  Eventually I found the Baby Cache Melbourne which is more expensive than the original we picked but I can get the long dresser and in turn, skip the changing table.  We have been doing alot of searching and while the baby cache is more expensive than some (less than others) I feel it's a higher quality piece of furniture and will hopefully make up its value with long term usability.

  • I am looking at Babies R Us. I also want the convertible crib, dresser, and the changing table with drawers. As far as I can tell now it's all expensive but it's a necessity. You can always reuse it or sell it. I personally would never buy that stuff used but there are lots of people who would.
