Babies: 0 - 3 Months

bf moms....

I noticed at about 6 weeks my LO gets up at night to nurse for a few minutes every few hours. It's like LO is just thirsty. He nurses for about 2 minutes and goes right back to sleep. Would this be considered as LO sleeping through the night? Is this happening to anyone else?

Re: bf moms....

  • At around 6-7 weeks DD started sleeping an 8 hour first stretch (this is uncommon, NOT the norm for most babies).  After that, she'd wake every 2 hours and would only nurse about 5 min. A couple weeks later she dropped that feeding on her own and now sleeps a 4-5 hour second stretch. I'd just keep going with the flow and following your baby. Maybe he'll drop some of those feeds, but maybe what he's doing is just what he needs.

  • sounds like he may just want to be soothed.  I would just keep going w/ the flow and if it seems to be working then go for it!

  • He might be cluster feeding and havng a growth spurt, or he may be starting to use nursing as a way to fall back asleep. My son did this. He would wake up, want to nurse, and not be able to fall back asleep with out it. He wasn't really hungry, but looking for the soothing aspect of it.

  • Our LO has never done that. At night he sleeps in 4 hour stretches.  When he wakes up he nurses for about 20 mins then back to sleep he goes.  I hope your LO starts sleeping in longer stretches.

  • All babies have different sleep patterns. As long as you are able to get enough sleep either though the night or with naps, don't worry too much about it. His sleep schedule may change again. Also, if you don't already do so, try bringing him to bed with you (if you are comfortable with it), sometimes just that closeness can help them sleep more.

  • If your LO is only feeding for 5 mins before going back to sleep, it sounds like he just wants to be soothed. If he was really hungry, he'd probably feed for longer. Have you tried using a pacifier?  You may be able to pop the paci in and have him fall right back to sleep again .
