Work from home

I would love to stay home with my LO but can't because of finacial reason.   I was just wondering if anyone knows of any ways to work from home that aren't scams?  I dont trust googling it.

  • You can watch other kids or try to take up a crafting hobby and sell it online.  I asked this question on TB a few months back and had a scammer send me a pm so beware!

  • Most legitimate WFH jobs start out as office jobs first.  Have you thought about proposing something to your boss about WFH, even 1-2 days per week?

My job can easily be done from home, so as part of my maternity leave, I proposed that I WFH 3 days/week for a month and then WFH 1 day/week for an additional 6 months after I return from leave.

I enjoy getting out of the house and working outside of the home, so I think 1 WFH day is perfect for me. If you have a job that can easily be done at home (tons of email, time to work on projects, etc.) then I'd propose something to your boss.

If you have a job that can not be done at home, then I think your best options are to either watch kids in your house or work for a company such as Pampered Chef, Thirty One, Tastefully Simple, etc where you can do shows and set your own schedule.

    Good luck!

  • Alpine Access is legit. You have to have complete silence during your hours, though, so you'd likely have to play it around your SO being home or else have someone in your home watching your LO.

  • If you find something, just keep in mind that it is highly unlikely you can do anything from home full time and also care for your baby full time. Taking care of baby is a full time job in and of itself. That said, you could maybe take on an additional child or two to watch in your home. That might be a good option.

I've heard good things about this company.  I've done customer service for LiveOps.com.  There's reliable leads on RatRaceRebellion.com.

Like PP said, to work on the phone you do need silence.  LiveOps would have random QA calls to make sure it was quiet and that you were following call protocols.  I liked that I could schedule when I wanted to work and work any additional hours, so a lot of time I could log in at 3 a.m. and get in some extra hours if I was up then.

I agree with the other pp who mentioned crafts.  If there is anything like that you excel at you may want to consider making that into a business.

I'm a massage therapist now and have always made my own spa products to use in session.  I recently showed DH how to make soap, so we've been selling that at the Farmer's Market (we're also backyard to market growers and sell heirloom produce as well), have a few local shops that want to carry our line and have been invited to seasonal craft shows as well.  I made soap using some of the honey from a local beekeeper, gave them a bar and told them that I also make balms and salves with beeswax, so they invited me to teach a workshop at their next beekeepers meeting, which is great because I find while many enjoy learning how something is made, most still prefer to just buy something readymade.

I always bring my massage chair out to events and offer complimentary chair massage with purchase, then give them a $10 off card to come see me at the spa.  Because of that I've been invited to bring my chair to other events and charge for it and have gotten several repeat clients and referrals to the spa.

So there are defintely many ways to parlay your creativity into income.  Good luck!

  • I work from home, but I worked in an office for 8.5 years first before transitioning to WFH. I am a producer & editor for a software eLearning company.

Although I WFH & my schedule is somewhat flexible, I still have  arrangements for DCPs to come to my home to watch DS. There's no way I could get any work done while properly caring for him at the same time. My DCP costs are lower than if I sent him to a center, though.

  • You will still need child care.

No company is going to be OK with you "working" while taking care of your baby.

This, but there are some you can find (most don't pay all that great and don't offer benefits.

After baby, I will be working as a Medical Transcriptionis (I did have to go through an online program for this), and I actually have an interview this week for a WFH position with Bazaarvoice (bazaarvoice.com) for a p/t position.

None of these will take the place of full-time employment money, but since I've been unemployed for 1.5 years, I'll take what I can get.

  • I work from home, but my company is located across the country from me and they have more people working from home than at the home office. I just got lucky that this job was in my field and the have great benefits etc.....though I do know that not many jobs like this exist.

If I was still at my previous job, I would have been able to work from home a few days a week but not 100% of the time. I worked there for 14 years so that would have helped but they would have wanted me in the office a few days a week.

But I will have to have someone watch the baby when my husband has to work. He is a fire fighter so he is on 24 hr shifts, 2 days a week.  Those days would require someone to watch the baby for a few hours.

     Good luck!

  • My husband just brought a new truck and  while he was at the dealership, the salesman gave him a roadside assistant package called Motor Club of America (MCA). He even said they where better than AAA and State Farm.  Well, my husband signed up and when he did it automatically put us in a referral program.

For each referral we get $80 (and they pay weekly, Friday).  It's funny because I've been looking for a work from home job to help out, but still be able to stay home with the kids.  I took advantage of the offer and started telling friends on my Facebook page; that was all she wrote!  I started to receive checks every week.  At first, say for the first two weeks, they where small like $460.  By my third week I pulled in $1862.  You can look them up here....

  • The forums on workplacelikehome review the various WFH companies and can help you weed out the scams.

I WFH with a regular salary but worked in a traditional office setting for many years before transitioning. I won't lie. It's not easy. You need to be very disciplined and have FT childcare set up. You basically need to make pretend you're not home! My childcare costs are the same as when I WOH only I can BF and I don't miss milestones. If I need to I can re-arrange my schedule so I can take my kids to appts and classes but I'm still working 8 hrs a day (actually more bc I took a huge pay cut when I made the transition so I also have 2 PT jobs which are also WFH). I save on lunches, commuting costs, and wardrobe but my taxes are totally different now bc I'm an independent consultant as opposed to a FT employee with standard withholdings.

  • You could do direct sales -- Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, etc. Some people do really well with this (although you still need to be able to go out at nights or on weekends to do shows). How about tutoring, giving music lessons, anything like that that can be done from your home?

Otherwise, I like PPs ideas about hawking crafts on etsy or a similar site or taking in another child to watch (probably the most reliable form of extra income.
