family practice physician instead of ob/gyn?

Hi!  I'm new to this site/the boards... my DH and I are planning to TTC soon.  My FIL is a physician (family practice guy, but is teaching at a med school now so not running his own practice) and so my in-laws have strong feelings that I should pursue seeing a family practice physician instead of an ob/gyn.  A lot of the posts I've read (not just on this particular forum but others), most women seem to see either an ob/gyn or a midwife - I haven't really read anybody's experience seeing solely a family doc.  All of my friends who have kids or are pregnant have used ob/gyns.  I want to find a doc to do a pre-TTC full checkup and make sure I'm healthy (and forcing hubby to go in for a check up too... you'd think that growing up the son of a doctor would make him keen on his health, but nope, he hasn't had a check up in ages)

 Any advice is appreciated :)

I know I am late in responding, but I would suggest an OBGYN or Midwife. They are trained in that area and know what to look for. They went into that field to me knowledgeable. Family Practice doctors are meant to treat the common cold, BP issues, etc etc (i know they are trained for more but you get the gist).

I was experiencing lack of periods and I took myself to the OBGYN for that reason, because my family doctor said, oh just give it time, it will be back...blah blah blah.  After a pelvic exam and an internal ultrasound they diagnosed my with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome and I am glad that I went to the OB becasue if I had just waited for my period to show up we would still be TTC. They put me on meds (not birth control) for me to get my period and help me ovulate, I went to an endocrinologist becasue with PCOS comes insulin resistance, I lost 40pounds, 1 miscarriage later here I am expecting a beautiful baby boy in September. After my m/c i was also diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, so I was referred to an specialist in Albany for an anatomy scan just to make sure the bay was developing just fine. My neuro is aware i am PG and i just saw him for a game plan for after the birth.

Please go to an OBGYN or Midwife and get your testing and prep you for TTC.

    Hope this helps.
