So, I am writing from the hospital. My BP spiked high, so I have been here overnight -- no pre-E yet, all my labs come back fine, doing a 24hr urine collection now. They started me on high BP medicine, and there is a real possibility that I will be here until 34 weeks (in about 1 week) and then they will induce (if I have pre-E).
Advice for people who have had pre-mature babies. I am freaking out. I feel terrible like this is my fault that he could be born early. They will give him the stereroid shot, and he is measuring 3 weeks ahead so he is already at 6lbs 1oz. I am trying to reassure myself that he will be fine and will only have to spend a short time in the NICU....ugh, baby stuff is not for wimps.
Re: Pre-mature baby advice....
His weight and him getting the steroid shots will be doing him great. I've been having to prepare for the idea of preemies for weeks now. My MFM has been reassuring me that at 34 weeks after steroid shots they do great. Just keep your head up. This is nothing you can blame yourself for. Try to stay calm because that can raise your blood pressure even more.
Take it from me the girl that has like every pregnancy problem known to man. I know it's hard to deal with and stay calm but just know even if he does come next week he will do great. He's already a big healthy boy.
Good luck to you and it's not your fault! My very healthy and lives-an-active-lifestyle sister was put on hospital bed rest at 32 wks due to vasa previa condition and early contractions. She was so nervous and stressed abut being there that they could not stop the contractions that first night and she had a CS. My nephew was born at 32 wks and spent a month in the NICU.
My advice, which is obviously easier said than done is: RELAX, don't stress, read, knit, take up an online shopping addiction, just don't think blame yourself! Our bodies go through a shiiiit ton while we're pregnant and there's a huge portion of it that is hormonal and has nothing to do with our actions before or during our pregnancies!
My son was born at 34 weeks when my water broke and was perfectly healthy. He never saw the inside of a NICU and he was under 5 lbs. He roomed and came home with me. Not the total norm but not unheard of either.
I know it's hard not to worry, even with positive stories. 34 weeks is excellent though! My doctor never stops labor at that point. Good luck!
I'm so sorry - do not blame yourself!
No advice, but my aunt had her baby at 32 weeks and he was just over 5 lbs. He was out of the NICU before her original due date and is turning 1 next week. He's a perfectly healthy and beautiful little boy.
Good luck!

I've been in the hospital since 30 weeks due a ruptured sac. I had the steroid shots then. Now they're just keeping me here until I hit 34 weeks then they're inducing me.
Did they give you the steroid shots yet? The baby doesn't get those, you do, before you deliver. You should have one ASAP then another 24 hours later.
Every single Dr in my OB's practice has told me that at 34 weeks they aren't at all concerned about how my babies will do when they're born. Their "magic number" is actually only 32 weeks. After that they're completely comfortable with a baby's level of development. I spoke with a NICU nurse last week who said that a lot of times 34 weekers come out acting just like full term babies, and all they need to do in the NICU is grow and learn to suck so they can eat on their own.
Have they had a Neonatologist come speak with you about what to expect should you have to deliver soon? If not, you should ask your nurse to have one come talk to you. We spoke to one when we got here and she gave us the info for what would have happened had I delivered when I got here at 30 weeks. We're having another one come talk to us next week about what to expect when I deliver at 34 weeks since the information is so different from 30 to 34 weeks.
Good luck!
7/30/12 - B/G twins born at 33w4d due to PPROM
Ask for a tour of the nicu, and speak to a neo about what to expect with a XX weeker.
If you do end up with a NICU baby, know that it's not the end of the world. Yes, you may have to deal with additional crap, but in most cases, it is temporary. The chances are very high he will be home by, if not before, your due date.

First of all, huge hugs to you!
My son was born at 35 weeks due to pre-e. And I felt many of the same feelings as you. But, there is nothing you could have done differently!! Hopefully you don't have it, but regardless, just try to stay calm and relaxed. Remember, every day that baby is inside, is a gift. So just focus on one day at a time. And it's great the doctor's are monitoring you. You are both in the right place right now! The fact that your LO is over 6 lbs is fantastic! My son was 6.2 lbs at birth and I know that helped a lot. He spent 8 days in the NICU. Once I was discharged I spent all my time with him. I wanted to breastfeed, so I focused on pumping every 3 hours (round the clock) to bring my milk in. And I breastfed him and did skin to skin as often as I could. Best of luck to you and your LO!!!
