toxoplasmosis

I understand outdoor kitties are more at risk because they can eat mice and be in contact with the disease and such....but my kitties are indoor but I have a lanai and they hunt lizards and I find pieces of them in my home...yes gross findings. Can lizards carry toxoplasmosis

I tried googling it but have found nothing saying No or Yes....

Re: toxoplasmosis

  • You may want to call the vet and ask that. Either your reg. vet or maybe an exotic vet in the area.

  • If you've had cats for most of your life, your risks are actually pretty low. It is caused by a parasite that you generally contract, kill off, and develop an immunity against. Some doctors will do a titer (test for immunity) if you request it - but most of them just tell you to avoid cat feces. The protazoan parasite that causes toxoplasmosis only affects warm blooded animals. Lizards shouldn't be a problem unless you have some magical warmblooded lizard who's been buddy-buddy with a bunch of felines.

  • May be they are buddy-buddy with them haha and then my cats trick them...that made me smile :)

  • Just have someone else change the cat box, wear one of those little mask/gloves when you do it, and wash your hands plenty if you are the only one who can do it. No need to stress.

  • For me it's a good excuse to have DH change the litter instead of me :)

If you are the only one to change it, you should be fine. Most of the cases of toxoplasmosis are caused by unwashed fruit and veggies not cats. Still, I would wear gloves and wash your hands very well. (Then again, I did that before I was pregnant. It is poop afterall).

  • Thanks all....yup it is just me...I wear the gloves but at times forget...
