Root canal during first tri?

I have been having shoot pain on my bottom right side of my mouth. I thought maybe my gums were just inflamed from pregnancy hormones, but I just came back from the dentist, and she 'thinks' I need a root canal. I wouldn't let her give me an x-ray, until I did my research and spoke to my OB. It's a tooth all the way in the back, and she said there's already a large filling in it.

Does anyone have any experience with dental surgery in pregnancy?

Re: Root canal during first tri?

  • What did your OB say? Mine said I need to wait until after 12 weeks so I have my appointment set for my fillings...I have 3 cavities and I knew about them prior to being pregnant and am mad at myself for not taking care of it then. My OB had to send a letter with the dos and don't for my dentist to follow...

  • I had fillings done around 20 weeks when I was pregnant. I don't know about the root canal, but your OB should have that information. Also, if your dentist knows you are pregnant then they can use the appropriate pain medicines.

  • I had x-rays, a few fillings, an old filling removed, and a crown placed when I was about 20 weeks during my last pregnancy.  My OB and dentist knew what was going on, and took necessary precautions.  Everything turned out okay with me and DS.  In my case, the risks outweighed the benefits.  I would say your thing is pretty important, and wouldn't be a good idea to wait until after the baby is born.

  • If you do need a root canal, you could get sick if infection sets in/spreads and you might not have a choice. In the meantime, you can look around your area for a dentist who has a the newest, "least radiating" machine. And, perhaps they could over do the lead "dressing" when they do the X-ray. Also if you could make it past the mark where the embryo becomes a fetus, maybe that would be best?

    Just thoughts...

  • You can have x-rays during pregnancy. Make sure they are digital and they should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use the lead vest and thyroid collar, pregnant or not. 20 x-rays (a whole mouth series) produces as much raditation as an hour plane ride. You will have probably 1 before the RC and 2-3 during, so no where near the same amount. You could put it off, but it will be more painful and the infection might spread if you wait.

  • I had a cavity filled the day after I got my BFP and it was about as close to needing a root canal as you could get. After they filled it he said that I very likely could still need a root canal. I was given a referral to an oral surgeon but luckily the filling has so far done the trick!! If you need it done you need it done!
